' ary RECORD OF Mr. Josiah William Bailey RALEIGH. N. C. Born September 10, 1873. Age 57 Years (Now a Practicing Attorney, and a Candidate for the l. S. Senate) In Year 1S9S Bailey charged by ihe Wilmington Messenger with being a Republican replied, “I am an independent and always have been.” 1S98 Bailey thanked God that Democratic Party could not carry an election in North Carolina. 1898 Bailey sneered at White Supremacy Issue in North Carolina. 1898 Bailey opposed Separate Cars for White and Col ored races in North Carolina (Now the Law under Consolidated Statutes, No. 3494). 1898 Bailey advocated reduction of North Carolina's Rep resentation in Congress. 1898 Bailey Eulogized Governor Russell and Served on Board of Agriculture with Negro, Jim Young. 1899 Bailey opposed to his belonging to any Party what ever. 1900 Bailey Discouraged White Supremacy Issue made by Simmons and other good Democrats. 1900 Bailey said Parties should be known by their Fruits. “Every Man Owes It To His Country To Vote as His Conscience Bids Him. We honor Wm. J. Bryan for saying this.” 1900 Bailey supported McKinley, Republican for Presi dent in 1900, and threatened to Bolt as a protest if if the Negro Question was injected into the Na tional Campaign, so Mr. Josephus Daniels says. 1900 Bailey preached Republican Insidiously which be gan to Unsettle the political life of a few life-long Democrats. 1904 Bailey Advocated Abandonment of Party if the Party adopted a policy he could not approve. 1904 Bailey urgde Bolting and Independentism, saying “The One King is Conscience and he has no rival whatever,” and further when his pen was in his hand “He Was For No Party Whatever.” 1907 Bailey was against State Prohibition and National Prohibition, saying that National Prohibition was unenforcibie and a delusion, and State Prohibition a failure. 1904 Bailey Said that the Only Remedy Against the Enemies of the Republic is Independent Adtion. The Slogan: “My Party Right or Wrong,” plays Right into the Hands of the Man who Wants it Wrong.” 1908 Bailey said he was an Independent Democrat and further “1 Scratched a Judge Once Because He Was a Drunkard. I would Scratch a Drunkard Again. Would You?” 1908 Bailey said “I Am Independent in That I would not vote for Immoral Men or Measures if all the Democratic Parties in the World Should Support Them.
