Awards Are Made In Essay Conteest Rocky Mount, June 2.—Miss Han nah Heptinstall, Aurelian Springs was winner here today in the eastern dis trict essay contest sponsored by the N. C. Cotton Growers Cooperative As sociation. She will represent that dis trict in the state contest which will he held in Raleigh later.2 There were four contestants in the district con test today and the competition was very keen.* Miss Dorohy Maddrey of Seaboard was the second highest scoring con testant. George T. Moore of Battle boro, who stood withing three points of the winner, placed third. Theron Strickland of Dunn, wh oalso finish ed only afew points behind his near est competitor, took fourth place. The four speakers were the high est scoring contestants in a series of community and county contests. William T. Patterson ^ On May 28, 1930, the spirit of W. 'i'. Patterson, En-.poria, Va„ was called into eternity. He was fifty-five years ef age and had been sick for a long time, suffering with cancer. He was a member of the Methodist i Episcopal Church South, at Pelham, ! N. C., and had made Emporia his • heme for several years. I Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. O. Harvell, pastor of Green ville Charge, M. E. Church South, Emporia, \ a., and his body was laid to rest at Round Hill Church midst a li'rge crowd of friends and loved ones. C., Miss Lillian May and Miss Gertrude Patterson of Em poria, Va. -□ Mr. Thomas R. Hicks Dies at Baltimore, Md. Mr. Thomas R. Hicks, Baltimore, Md., died at Baltimore City Hospital, Tuesday, May 27, at five o’clock. He was brought to his sister’s home near Thelma and Thursday, taken to Wise and laid to rest in the Jerusaleum Church cemetery. He is survived by his mother. Mrs. F. J. Hicks and two sisters, Mrs. W. M. Hockaday and Miss Stella Hicks.
