BASCOES STILL LEAD WAY IN INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE TRIPLE R AND PATTERSON aSHOW IMPROVEMENT “—DEEP SLEEPS SLIDE Fourth of July is the time for fire works and ball games and last Fri day was no exception. The Patterson Mill Silver Kings and the league leading Rosemary Bascoes started out with the first game of the scheduled double header. Crowder, ace of the Patterson squad started for them, while “Husky” Johnson went to the mound for the Bascoes. Crowder lasted five innings, finally going out and Love replacing him. Johnson pitched steady ball for the full route and hung up his second vic tory in two starts. Finch, Alligood and Matthews led the Bascoes hitting, while Jones was the big flare for the Kings. The final score was 7 to 1, with Patterson getting their only tcore by the way of an error. The second game was between the Heepsleeps and the Triple R’s and the odds were all in favor of the down towners. Carroll started for the Peepsleeps but was not effective and the town team was hitting him all along the way. The pitching of Jim mie Edmondson was the outstanding thing about the town team’s play. ' He held the Deepsleeps to two lone ^Ungles while his team mates pounded out enough hits from Carroll’s de livery to put the game cm ice. The final score was 2 to 1. It was a fast, well played game. The two Shearin 1 oys, Mitchell and Joe were the bat ting stars of the game. Edmondson, i town team catcher stood out, in all ' icund play. Crowder was not satisfied with the way Rosemary treated him the Fourth, so he came back and started to setting the Deepsleeps on their 1 eads with some fancy pitching. Fra zier pitched for the Roanokers and the Patterson Mill boys handled him rough, hitting about everything he throwed in to them. Only some fancy fielding by left fielder Hux held the score down. He made one of the best catches seen in these parts in a long while when he came in fast on a loop ing Texas Leaguer in the fourth and made a circus catch. The Roanokers were minus the services of center fielder Pearce, who was out with a bad hand. The final score was 3 to 1 and shoved the Roanoke bunch in the cellar. The last game was between the Rosemary Bascoes and the Triple R’s. And what a game. The Bascoes were on the small end of a one to nothing score up until the sixth inning. The Triple R’s scored in the first stanza when Edmondson tripled to right cen ter and continued on in home when Matthews threw wild to Lowder at third. From then on it was nip and tuck, the Bascoes getting three on in the fifth with none out but the town team tightened up and it was still one and nothing. In the sixth Ryals singled, Gotland hit a long fly to left that was fumbled by Smith and then Finch came up. He immediately hit one of the longest balls seen in these parts in many a day. It bounced some where out in deep center and Outland and Ryals scored. When the smoke* bad cleared away the Bascoes had the game 5 to 1. Birdsong pitched almost shut-out ball all the way to hang up his fourth victory of the season. I* inch, Edmondson and Alligood led the Bascoes attack, while Jimmie Ed mondson led the towners. B. This is the first milestone y->u have reached on your educational highway. I hope and trust that it may be a sign board as well as pointing you to higher training in the collegiate world. Do not allow it to be a detour sign; but be persistent and travel straight ahead on the educational highway. We Chowanians are very anxious for you to he pointed this way and to Chowan college, for we believe we have exactly the place for which both mother and daughter are looking. This is a time of financial depress ion and of necessity, retrenchments: We believe we have the solution to the problem of sending daughters to col it ge—namely the low cost for which we can train students: our prices arc irom $150 to $200 cheaper than other institutions of similar type. We give you exactly the same training as I said, at a much lower cost. We are able to do this for we are not located in a city, which is advantageous, and because we operate a small farm from v hich we serve our own fresh vege tables and fresh milk. Why go elsewhere when you can get the same training at home and at a much lower cost? Allow me to call your attention to two other features of our college— namely, business courses in typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, spelling and penmanship. We meet the State requirements of all class “A” certificates. We offer courses in public school art, students that plan to teach have a splendid opportunity to do observation and practice teaching in the local pub lic school through an agreement with both local and county educators. Another feature of our college is the splendid training in the homo eco nomies field. We are expecting to make a greater feature of this field in the future than heretofore. We are changing our B. S. Degree into a B. S. in Home Economics De gree. This will of necessity alter the courses and subjects leading to that degree. We shall be glad to answer any in quiry or send catalog to anyone in terested. I Wishing each of you a happy va cation, I am, Sincerely, W. B.
