JACKETS WILL PLAY GREENVILLE AT FAIR
LOSE GAME
LAST WEEK
Drop First Conference Tilt To
Washington High School
19 to 6
Returning from Washington last
week with a 19 to 6 loss to the far
Eastern lads, the Roanoke Rapids
Yellow Jackets will take on Green
ville at the Halifax County Fair Fri
day at three thirty.
It will be the locals fourth Confer
ence game, the one dropped to Wash
ington being their first defeat. Ac
cording to the dope the Jackets lost
to Washington due to the fact that the
Pamlicos were just too strong.
The Yellow Jackets up until this
game had defeated Washington five
years in succession in football. Cre
dle, fullback of the Washington team,
was mainly responsible for the Roa
noker’s setback, while they had Roa
noke Rapids outweighed in the line
and backfield.
Mills and Colon Womble stood out
for the Rapids, Womble scoring the
only touchdown by grabbing a pass
and racing twenty yards for the
marker. “Tinymite” Matthews play
ed a hangup game until a knee in
jury finally put him out.
The game was marred by too many
penalties, and too much growling by
both teams.
The Greenville Greenbacks will
come to town this Friday with a team
that is rated far above anything that
they have produced down there in
many years, and are expected to give
the Jackets all they can handle. Pro
bably one of the biggest crowds of
the year will see the game.
And Coach Hoyle will not have any
pleasant dreams with Greenville, New
Bern, Elizabeth City, looming up in
front of his Yellow Jackets.
SPORT
BRIEFS
And thev say that this boy Cred1'
for Washington is plenty good. He
stands six feet in stockings and he
weighs 180. Very husky for a young
ster, we would like to see him when
he gets full grown.
Saw Carolina and Maryland play
Saturday at the Hill. Some game.
All Carolina needs is a line and they
would have a team. Branch and Man
ner are two of the beat backs m the
Southern Conference. Fullback House
from Weldon, does his part, too.
And that reminds us, if this
Matthews boy from Rosemary,
keeps on improving, and puts oa
more weighty when he finishes
High School seme college will be
overlooking a good prospect M
they don’t take him in.
And tha treminds us: Jimmy Shell,
who plays center for the Jackets, is
quite a witty character. He broke out
with this one after the Washington ;
aiffair: That Roanoke Rapids was I
winning until the Referee stole his
hammer away from him. Which was
not so bad at that Tush, tush, Jim
my.
In our selection last week we pick
ed Carolina to beat Maryland and they
did—lucky at that. We picked Duke
to lick Davidson and they did. We
picked N. C. State to beat Clemson
and they did—not—• losing 27 to 0.
We picked Guilford to lick Randolph
Macon, it was a scoreless tie. Roa
noke Rapids got our predicted six
points against Washington but fail
ed to hold the lads from Down East—
result Washington 19, Roanoke Rapids
6.

Yale will have a healthy respect for
eGorgia from now on. Beaten by the
Southerners at Athens last year 15
to 0. they were out for revenge this
year in the Bowl, but Georgia finally
emerged victor by the score of 18 to
14. Albie Booth played a fine game
but the Georgia Crackers were all ov
er this streak who wears the blue of
Yale.
Curley Byrd can lay claim to two
of the best backs in Maryland in Ber
ger and Evans. Together they almost
beat Carolina Saturday. Only Mr.
Branch saved them.
The Twin Cities can lay claim io
one of the best athletic plants in E .’ t
ern Carolina with Simmons Field, and
cne of the best in North Carolina for
a town of its sbe. The mills should
be congratulated on having a baseball
and football fiell of ibis kind. The
High S hool shuiid r.ot be ashamed
of its gridiron, ard if ;cu don’t be
lieve it look over other p’aces— you
will waka up.
Knute Rockne is in bad luck. Only
last week we found out that two of
his players are on the injured list and
now he has only one hundred and
eighteen players left. How can Notre
Dame have a winning team this sea
son? We are puzzled.
A good tip: Styles for the coming
football games, judging from what
we observed at the Maryland-Carolina
game. Orange Crush will be in vogue
for the man w’ho prefers a chaser.
Four out of five had an Orange Crush
and the fifth was hunting one. Oh
my! Those drastic Prohibition law’s.
Take Your Pick,
You Can’t Go Wrong
A local boy who has held the spot
light around these parts for quite a
while in sports will pick the winners
each week in football. Here is his
selection for this week:
STATE
Wake Forest over N. C. State.
Georgia over Carolina at Athens.
Navy over Duke at Annapolis.
Davidson over Citadel at Char
lotte. Guilford College over New
port News Apprentices at New
port News. Roanoke Rapids over
Greenville at Halifax Fair.
