LOCAL BILL alligood STATE ^ r I I K I m Sports Editor NATIONAL A |J ^tj"8 SPORT BRIEFS Weldon could easily have got along without sending in a writeup to the News and Observer of the All-Star game over here, and saying it was a High School affair. “Weldon High School Defeated Roanoke Rapids here Today 6-0.” It not only reflects on them but on their sportsmanship. It pays to advertise, but have something to back it up. The last time Roanoke Rapids Highs played Weldon it was 52-0. For the benefit of the Weldon scribe who sent in the game Thanks giving Day, let us suggest to him the following: In the future please omit the name High School when All-Star teams play. Jimmy Womble and “Snooks” Mat thews both should be congratulated on making the All-Conference team. If effort counted we could put every man on the High School squad on the team. The whole team should be given a big hand for the nice work this year. JJ/and Black |Mt far (naUr tiIw tluut tli* prloa. Thm pautS H. Thm paaclla U.M. Aaldaal gift slag, ly aruiNt TAYLOR’S DRUG STORE Rosemary, N. C. MY NORTHEASTERN CONFERENCE ELEVEN (By Pill A Ili good) The Northeastern Conference sche dul ein football has been closed. Go ing back and reviewing the past seas on, we can easily see that it has been a most successful one from every standpoint. Elizabeth City with a well balanced and well coached team under Coach Hunesucker, former N. C. State Col lege star won the conference cham pionship, going through the entire conference schedule without a single defeat. It was a great record and the Elizabeth City team can be congratu lated on its good showing. New Bern and Roanoke Rapids tied for second place with two defeats each out of an eight game schedule. These two teams were very evenly matched and their last game of the season fought each other to a 7-6 score wiht Roa noke Rapids coming out on top. In picking an all-conference team, or in picking any kind of all star team is is very hard on the person picking the team. Maybe he will really see a good back or lineman on a day that he does not play an outstanding game. To avoid this we have sought the ad vice of the majority of Conference coaches, along with several referees. By doing this we have eliminated the possibility of overlooking some really deserving player. Man for man we School team, or any all State pick and firmly believe it would hold its own. The Northeastern Athletic Confer ence is composed of Northeastern Carolina High Schools and include the following: Elizabeth City, Washington, Green ville, New Bern, Roanoke Rapids, Ay den, Fannville, Kinston, Tarboro. Picking The Quarterback We havethree signal callers in the conference who are really good, show nice headwork and are cool under fire. One of them, Cannon from New Bern was scratched because he calls signals from center. There remained two, Davis of Elizabeth City and Womble of Roanoke Rapids. Davis is the fast er of the two. Both of them are triple threat backs. Womble gets the call 1 ecause of his nice headwork and cool selection of plays. We shift Davis to halfback on account of his lightning speed, good blocking, passing and bunting. He is the best back in the conference. Picking The Other Halfback We pick Britt of Ayden High, be cause of his good blocking and run ning. He is one of the hardest run ning backs in the conference. Barrett of Farmville and Lewis of Tarboro are not far behind. Lewis constantly punts 45 and 50 yards. Fullback Credle of Washington and Brinson of New Bern are the two best in the conference. Both boys weigh 180 puonds and are good blockers and plungers. Brinson gets the call for first team on account of his excellent work against Washington, Elizabeth City, Roanok eRapids. He is a bull on offense and on defense backing up the line he cannot be beat. Right End We pick Carow of Washington. Carrow weighs 170 pounds, is fast and an excellent pass receiver. On defense he is a stone wall. McNeill of Roanoke Rapids gets the call on the second team. McNeill weighs 150 pounds and is a great defensive end. Left Tackle Captain Cox of Ayden High gets the lef ttackle position on account of his outstanding work this season. His hard tackling and keen judgment of plays make him one of the oustanding tackles of the year in High School circles. Jones of Washington gets the second team tackle assignment. Left Guard Gurads are scarce in the Conference this year ,but Peed of Elizabeth City has played consistently good football throughout the season. Bragg of New Bern gets the second team call. Both of them are good men, know their po sitions and play them. Center The pivot position is a difficult one. Shannonhaus of Elizabeth City has played a wonderful game all the sea son and gets the call. Cannon of New Bern is close behind but calling sig Our 25c Print Cloth During Our CHRISTMAS SALE —Will Be— 20c Yard Come And Get Yours ! CROWDER’S The CHRISTMAS CLUB meets your holiday requirements. Right Guard Matthews of Roanoke Rapids con stantly playing men outweighing him ten to fifteen pounds has put up a great game. He only weighs 145 pounds. Matthews gets the first call while Gautier of Washington another good guard gets the second assign ment. Right Guard Daughtry of New Bern, weight 188 pounds, is the best tackle in the con ference. Defense and offense he is a wonder. Daughtry will captain the all-conference team. Brown of Roa noke Rapids is a good tackle, fights hard and is in there all the time. He gets the second call. Right End Scott of ElizabethCity gets the call for this end on account of his fine de fensive work and pass receiving. Bry ant of New Bern is not far behind. Both play a good game. Honorable Mention Dickens of Roanoke Rapids, whom we pick to be one of the outstanding backs of the conference next year. Johnson of Elizabeth City, a nice plunging fullback. Parker of New Bern, a good tackle. Howard of Wash ington ,another good guard. Shell of Roanoke Rapids, one of the best de fensive centers in the conference. Cul lom of Roanoke Rapids, a nice tackle. Everyone of the above boys know football and if such thing was possible they could give a good account of themselves against any all-star High School team in the State. VERBAL BATTLE Sports Editor and Old Timer Continue Newspaper Argument This man who goes by the title of Old Timer in The Herald still insists .that the 1930 team is the best team to ever don High School togs. In his column last week he comes back at me with the remark that the 1926 team did not build for the future. To my way of thinking it is still more re markable that a team with so little reserve strength could build up such 1 a record, and one of the reasons we did not have two and three teams out on the field was because we did not have them in High School to come out. The student body of 25-26 was at least one hundred and fifty less than the present school. We had no hired coach, did no teven have enough jer seys to outfit the first team. Only the two ends and four backfield men had jerseys to wear, the rest of the men had to wear sweat shirts. We agree, it is a great thing to build for the future, but suppose you have nothing to build on? Is it fair to take away our glory that we fought so hard for because of the fact * at we had no second and third string teams? Take your time, Old Timer, be fair, give us what’s coming to us. Take a look at our three year record and match it with any team that has ev er represented the Yellow Jackets be fore or since. 1924, Roanoke Rapids, 2, Tarboro, 6. Roanoke Rapids, .0, Oxford, 0. From the 1924 team we lost six men, from the 1925 team we lost five men. If running our points from 94 in 1924 to 202 in 1926 and losing all of these men. Well! If that's not building for the future we don’t know what you can. The team of 1930 had 53 points scored against them, exactly the num ber of points we had scored on us in three years. AU Time And All Everything Football Team We have been asked to name an all time football team. Its rather hard to de, but after much thought we have decided that with the team named be low we could take any kind of cham pinoship so here goes: Quarterback, Napoleon, plenty of brain. Right half Mercury, that fast Greek Guy. Left half, the man who raced from Marathon to Athens with news of vic tory. Fullback, Goliath, that big smash and jam man. Right end, Atilla, the Hun, the boy who smashed Europe. Left end, Appolo, who should be in good form. Left tackle, Hercules, who should wreck other teams. Left guard, John L. Sullivan. He will get his man. Center, Jupiter, who if he can spiral a football like he threw thunderbolts, should make good. Right guard, Primo Camera, a good guard. Right tackle, Alexander the Great, plenty of fight. As an extra backfield I would have Paul Revere at half, Buffalo Bill at the other half, George Washington at Quarter and Stonewall Jackson at full, another Four Horseman backfield. Sub halfback, Solomon, who if he made a touchdown for each wife, would be leading scorer. Of course, all of this may sound sil ly—it is. But just imagine Knute Rockne with material such as the above. What a team, what a team. Its all right to be strict around a hotel but we think its going too far when you start ordering a visiting team out of the lobby and calling them loafers. That is exactly w.hat happen ed in Tarboro. Coach Hoyle with sev eral of his squad was in the Tarboro Hotel resting for the game, meanwhile the coach was attending to several in jured players, when the owner of the hotel walked up and asked them to get out. If Tarboro ever plays Roanoke Rapids here they will find a different class of people to deal with. We can at least be hospitable if they cannot. All N. E. The game was hard fought from start to finish with Patterson Mill leading at the half 5-4. The boys from Patterson Mill showde great improvement over then last game with Littleton Highs. Their passing and shooting was better. Fer rell at forward and Crowder at for ward stood out for th elosers. Coach Liske announces that the Patterson Mill team will meet Littleton in a re turn game here Monday night at seven thirty. Plenty of Xmas at CROWDER’S CHRISTMAS SALE NOW ON — C-0-M-E-! WELDON WINNER All - Stars Defeat Rapids Stars 6-0 In Thanksgiving Tilt— Zero Weather wun tne weather hovering around j the zero mark, while a small crowd of j faithful fans shivered on the sidelines, the Weldon All-Stars defeated an All- j Star team from Roanoke Rapids here .Thanksgiving day in a charity game 6-0. A pass from Hux to Partin for 20 yards enabled Weldon to score their one and only touchdown. Th etouch down was scored in th efirst period. From then on it was a nip and tuck battle played almost in the center of the field with neither team showing any great offensive power. The local All-Stars main disadvantage was in not knowing the plays they used, on defense they displayed a bulldog front to hold the Weldon backs in check. Glenn Gurley and James McNeill were the outstanding linemen for the locals, while Robert Vick also played a nice game at center. Lester Ed mondson, “Scoopy” Dickens and Jim my Edmondson were the only local backs who got away for any gains at all. Dick Brown played a nice de fensive game.
