WASHINGT’N IS VICTOR Visitors Take Game Easily— Third Conference Defeat For Locals The Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jack ets took another dive towards the Northeastern Conference cellar here last Friday night going down in de feat before the Washington High tossers 24-14. It was the locals third sright defeat in Conference circles. It was the same old story with Coach Hoyles’ Jackets: lack of ability to cage the ball and a lax defense spelled defeat before the first half was over. Newton, who started at center in place of Brown let Gautier shoot three field goals in the first quarter for Washington. Brown then came in but the big center of the vis iting team accounted for eleven points in all for his part of the game and helped with many more by his passing and floor work. Washington showed two All Con ference guard material In Credle and Carrow; both of them played an out standing game and along with Gau tier were responsible for the Jack ets’ third straight slide towards the bottom. Matthews, who holds down a forward for the Jackets, shot six points for his team and was high scorer for them. Washington after the first half seemed to take the game for granted, toying around in their territory with the ball and taking things easy. Roa noke Rapids rained a score or more long shots at the basket in the last half in a vain effort to score, half of them were too short or too long and the other half went on the indoor track, and with the visitors exhibit ing a wonderful defense, they had no chance to work the ball in for short shots. Sullivan played a good game at forward, while Brown's work at cen ter in a defensive way could not be beat. The rest of the team passed and that was all. The Jackets will go to Greenville this Friday for their fourth Confer ence game with the Greenbacks and from v.hat we hear the Greenies. under Coach Billy Brown, former Carolina star, has some team down there. Otuland won three rounds. Love one, and the fifth was declared a tie. It was a nice fight from beginning to end. Outland had Love worried with a nice left in most of the rounds, but the Patterson Mill lad was clearly not in condition. A large crowd was on hand to see the fight and a return bout between these boys with longer rounds would prove a real attraction. Both boys donated their services to the Boy Scouts, Troop 1, Rosemary.
