SPORTING NFwg -LOCAL - STATE - NATIONAL — Bill Alligood, Editor -SPORTING NEWS OUtLAND K. 0’s LOVE IN FOURTH! Wilmer “Scrappy” (Jutland, who weighs in around 135 pounds, of Rosemary, N. C., knocked out Henry Love, who weighs in around the same figure, last Saturday in the High School Gym. The bout was put on as an added attraction to the Dur ham-Jacket basketball game. The re feree was Lester Edmondson of Roa noke Rapids. Jimmie Edmondson was timekeeper. The first round was even w'th both battler? feeling each ether cut and fighting a cautious battle. Th ' second and third rounds were both taken by Love while the fourth was (Jutland’s up until a few seconds be fore the bell rang. Both fighters came out of a clinch and Love sud denly fell to the floor gasping for bieath, he was counted out. Love insisted after the fight that he had some kind of heart attack that he is afflicted with. It was Oui land’s second win over Love in their two fights and his first knockout. Durham Wallops Jax The Roanoke Rapids Highs lost to Durham here last Saturday night 28-4 in a basketball game that was filled with many varied phases of the court game. Durham had a well drilled team and showed one of the btst defenses seen here in a long time. The Jackets only shot two field goals, one in the first half and one in the second to score 4 points. Brown playing guard dropped one Hurricanes Lose To New Bern! in the first for two points and New ton who went in for Matthews in the last quarter shot another one. “Snooks” Matthews, forward for the locals played one of the most outstanding floor games of the con test and until he went out in the fourth quarter on fouls, he played a whale of a game. Brown also play td a nice defensive game. Durham scored eighteen points in the first half but the locals tighten ed down in the remaining two quar ters and held then* to the remaining ten points. THIS & THAT Its a cinch that Roanoke Rapids will not land any basketball players on the Northeastern Conference all star selection. Matthews and Sulli van are the two best players on the squad and that is not saying much. Captain Sullivan has been in and out the whole season while Matthews, with some very good floor work, has been outstanding, but on the shooting he has been a flop. He has simply not had his eye on the basket. We regret to state that Elmer Starkes has quit basketball to devote more time to studying. Elmer is a fairly good basketball player and the squad will miss him. He will possibly be out for baseball, although he did not pitch but a couple of games last year for the Jackets, he did some good work with the American Legion Juniors winners of the Eastern championship. His fielding and hit ting was a feature of the team. If Henry Hardison comes through, Coach Hoyle will have a good first baseman or a hard hitting outfielder. With a little coaching Hoyle will have a clean-up man on his team that will be hard to beat in High School circles. And how about the Textile league, will we have one this year? No in formation is forthcoming from any source. How about a meeting; lets get this thing started. A meeting now will help things to get started early. We were caught napping last year. Durham showed a nice passing and blocking team here Saturday night against the Jackets. They use the Meanwell system, the same that Te bell used at N. C. State. It means plenty of short pass and doubling back and the Bull City lads work ed it very nice. This little Virginia Akers looks plenty good to me at a guard po sition. She is fast and covers her op ponent like a tent. In watching one of the girls basketball team work outs a week ago, she looked plenty good—anyway she is a darn good substitute. And talking about boxing, wc would like to see “Soy Bean" Mills and Wilmer Outland fight. Outland would find Mills a little tougher than any opposition that he has encount ered yet. It would be a dandy scrap and would probably be a knockout for Mills or Outland. Red Devils Lose To Enfield Reserves The Rosemary Red Devils lost to the Enfield Reserves on the latter’s court last Friday night 16-16 in a hotly contested affair. The Red Dev ils, handicapped by some loose offi ciating and a court with low rafters, nevertheless held the reserves down during most of the game. The re feree let the game get entirely away from him after tile firs’, quar ter and it developed into a rough and tumble contest wiin no holds bar red. Allsbrook, Dickens and Everette stood out fbr the Devils, while Wood was outstanding for Fnfieli. A bunch of lassies from Craven County run up a total of 21 points here last Friday night to defeat the local Black and Gold Hurricane High School girls in a game that was thrilling from whistle to whistle, by the score of 21-15. Captain M. Stallings of the visit ing team was the fly in the Hurri can esoup, shooting 18 points for New Bern, the other two forwards accounted for three points between them. “Lanky” Stansbury was high scorer for the locals with ten points while Wilson was second with four. 44Spec” Hines played a great defen sive game to hold the New Bern score down and to prove that she is one of the best guards in the Conference. The line-up: New Bern Los. Hurricanes Stallings, Capt Stainback, Capt. F B. Stallinggs Wilson F Williams Stansbury F Cherry Tudor G Withington Hines G Latte Mills G SHELL’S FIRE JIMMY SHELL Baseball season will soon be here and I reckon the people around here are wondering if the Yellow Jackets will repeat what they did last year. They went through a tough schedule and cinched the upper berth by de feating Kinston High School 18 to 6. i It seems that such a thing might be possible as all the players will be back on the squad except two out fielders, Ikey Johnson and Zell Bur nette. The line-up this year will probab ly be close to the one last year with Grant on third, James Womble at short stop, Matthews at second and Newton at first. If Newton plays first, Harrison will probably shift to the outfield. This is only my point of view as Harrison and Newton are both good first basemen. Newton is faster on first than Harrison and this is the reason I picked Newton for the berth. Harrison is a good hitter and will probably play right or center field. Dickens, B. Brown, C. Brown and Mills and f anny will also be seeking a bunk in the outfield. The pitching staff if no more boys try out for pitching this year will be Womble, Starkes and Shell. The former two carried the Yellow Jackets through a successful schedule last year. Sul livan, Pridgen and Bounds will prob ably be the catching material this year. It seems that this bunch could walk away with anything the other con ference teams could produce. But sometimes plajiters get it in their neck that they’re good and then they go blooey. The basketball team this year is m better shape than ever before, but it seems the boys are just not hitting the basket with the pill. Last week the boys showed good form a specta tor told me that from the games he had seen the Yellow Jackets out played the other teams on the floor, but they couldn't hit the basket when they got the chances so we came out on the bottom. Captain Sullivan has’nt been out to practice for the last week, for the doctor is afraid tha this cold will develop into something more serious. Phillip Newton is playing in Sulli van’s forward position untli he gets well. In case you don’t know, Jimmy Womble was elected Captain to lead the Yellow Jackets against their foes this year. He produced a good hitting and fielding record last year and was one of the team’s most val uable players. Weldon School Man Speaks To Kiwanis Supt. Oakes of the Weldon City Schools was the main speaker at the loqttl Kiwanis Club last Thursday night. His subject, “The Home of Yesterday and the Home of Today,” was handled in a masterful manner and created much after-discusaion. Committee reports on incorporation were heard by the members with much interest.
