AURELIAN SPRINGS SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS Friends of Miss Virginia Liles are sorry to. learn that she is ill with in fluenza. Rev. W. C. Wilson held his regu lar appointment at Tabor Sunday. He preached a most inspiring ser mon. Dr. L. H. Justice was in our neigh borhood Monday. His friends are glad to know that he is able to be out again after spending about 4 weeks in the Roanoke Rapids hos pital. The A. S. H. S. Glee Club broad casted in Raleigh Monday under the direction of Miss Crabtree, music teacher here. W. L. Browning spent Sunday here with his family. Mrs. C. L. Kelly and Mrs. V. C. Matthews spent Monday in Raleigh. Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Matthews en tertained the High School teachers and the Senior Class Saturday night. Mrs. Clarence Thompson of Thel ma visited her mother here Wednes day afternoon. Mr. Will Nicholson of Airlie gave a talk in our Epworth League ser vice Sunday night. Leaders for next Sunday night are, Messers Roger Carlisle and D. H. Liles. Mrs. J. F. Boseman visited Miss Rebecca Dickens at Halifax last week. Little Linwood Warren has been sick for the past week. Mrs. J. R. Liles attended the legis lature in Raleigh Wednesday. Mr. Frank Cullom of Wilson vis ited friends and relatives here on Wednesday. Mr. D. R. Anderson of Weldon, was here on his regular business trips Thursday. John Liles Jr., and Wilburn Mo horn attended the dance at Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Johnston’s Wednesday night. Miss Annie Cherry of Roanoke Ra pids visited our school Monday, Tues day and Wednesday. Mr. Winfield Warren was able to go back to his work Wednesday. Misses Odell Smith, Burwell Pat tersonn, Janette Duncan, Julia De war, Grace Hunt and Bess Savage, spent the week-end in Miss Savage’s home, Speed, N. C. Mr. R. C. Hatley, a fromer teach er of here was a week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Thorne. Miss Dora Throne spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Thorne. Mr. Percy Crawley, a student at State, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Craw ley. The play “Mammy’s Little Wild Rose,” given by the A S. H. S. Se niors in the school auditorium Fri day night was enjoyed by a large crowd. The play was sponsored by Miss Margaret Gunn. On Saturday night Feb. 14, the members of the Christian Endeavor Society of Hawkins Chapel enjoyed a social given by the social commit tee at the home of one of our leading members. This was a Valentine so cial. Valentine games were played and later refreshments were served. This was enjoyed by everyone pres ent. Our society will meet Sunday, Feb. 22. at 3 o’clock. Everyone is in vited. Dr. Mitchell of Weldon has been in the neighborhood this week look ing after pelegra patients and other needy calls. Mrs. Wheeler accom panied him on the trip. It was dis tressing in some homes to see how badly situated the family was. William Arrington to Speak At Halifax Friday night, February 20, William Arrington will represent Aurelian Springs in the American Legion con test. This school has won distinction several times by entering this con test. The school is pushing William forward and expecting him to bring back honorable mention. School Pledge We pledge allegiance to our school, teachers and pupils, for more work and better work, truthfulness, faith fulness, and for all which this school has stood for in the past, and stands for now. Group Center Meeting At Aurelian Springs On Wednesday the group center teachers in and around Aurelian Springs including Hawkins Chapel, Calvary, New Hope, Hollister and Aurelian Springs, held their group meetin. The morning was spent in observ ing the grammar grades from the 1st through the seventh. The primary teachers visited the primary grades and so on up through the seventh. Each teacher being allowed to ob serve the grade and unit of work she was most interested in. After a nice lunch served by the school cafeteria and members of the High School fa culty. The teachers met in discus sion. The subject being: “The Crea tive Powers of the Child and How to Direct These." Each teacher present brought some piece of creative work done by a child in her grade. Much interest was created by the lovely pieces of wood shown, and much was gained from the ideas and means ex pressed by the teachers. The teachers feel that the spirt of helpful thinking and exchanging ideas plus the sociability of such a getting together is worthy of the cause. THIRD GRADE NEWS We are very sorry that so many of our little classmates have been out of school on account of sickness. We hope that they will all be able to be back with us real soon. Friday afternoon Mrs. Kelly, our grade mother, gave us a lovely sur prise. She brought us a nice tray filled with delicious candy. After the candy had been passed arourd two or hree imes, Mrs. Kelly asked fdward Ba^k^r to tell us a rtcry. We had a VaVnt;r.e box last of all. Everyone received ntarv pretty \*i entines. We wish to thank Mrs. Kel ly for the lovely surprise she gave us. The permis sion was gotten through the influ ence of E. K. Veach, agriculture teacher. The program was one of the series of programs sponsored by the Young Tar Heel Farmers Clubs. The music was directed by Miss Crabtree. The party was chaperoned by Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Kelly. Dickens. Leonard Mo hom. “The Art of Music” The members of the Epworth Lea gue enjoyed a program given by Laura Alice Crawley, Feb. 15, 1931. The program was: Song. Bible reading, Annie P. Crawley. Benediction. Rich Square Victory Tuesday night brought a victory to Rich Square when Aurelian Springs challenged them with a game of basketball. Winner of Content To Go To Duke Aurelian Springs High School will be represented by Hannah Heptin stall, Saturday, Feb. 21, at the speak ing contest sponsored by the 9019 of Duke University. The preliminary contest for the school was held Wed. Feb. 11. Those competing were William Thorne, Perkins Crawley, William Arrington and Hanna Heptinstall. Perkins Crawley won second. Senior Play The Senior play of A. S. H. S. was presented Friday night, Feb. 13 be fore a very pleasing crowd. The presentation of the play proved to be a success throughout. The name of the play, “Mammy's Lil’ Wild Rose,” proved to be very enjoyable. The striking scene of real mountain atmosphere were very pleasing and different from any scenes recently shown by usual plays. The cast was composed completely of Seniors. Bear Swamp The G. A. Girls of Bear Swamp gave a Valentine party Saturday night at 7:30. Maudine Shearin, El sie Chichester and Susie Wood plan ned a nice treat for us with appro priate decorations. The games were arranged and all took part. First, the couples were matched then con tests were held. The winners in the first contest were Agnes Chichester and Jesse Aycock. In the second were Elsie Mohorn and Albert Stal lings. We then drew our hearts and fortunes out of Cupids Mailbox. Then we had two speeches and play ed other games after which sand wiches and coca were served. The sandwiches were cut in the shape of hearts. Our plates also had other Valentine decorations. Then we were given hand made cups filled with candy hearts (sweethearts) for sou venirs. Those who enjoyed he G. A. Val entine party were Misses Elizabeth and Mildred Aycock, Agnes, Lila and Maudine Chichester, Elsie and Bes sie Mae Mohorn, Lora and Susie Wood and Maudgenia Shearin, Mes sers Stuart Wood, William Tippett, Jesse Aycock, Albert Stallings, Mil ton Chichester, Hilliard Hux, Leon ard Mohorn and Ira Shearin. The B. Y. P. U. met Sunday, Feb. 15, and gave a program on “The Holy Spirit and The Bible.” Those taking part on the program were, Agnes Chichester, Elsie Mohorn, Elizabeth Aycock, Helen Saunders, Maudine Chichester, L. L. Bowers and Albert Stallings. During the general assembly we decided to take the study course in March. The Missionary program was given and then the announce ment of the Rosemary B. Y. P. U. being with us Sunday evening (4th Sunday) at 6:30 o’clock, followed by services by uor pastor, E. R. Nel son. OUR SURPRISE PARTY On Feb. 13, 1931, Mrs. Matthews and three of the girls in our room gave us a surprise Valentine party. We played games such as “gossip” “feathers,” and “Come, Come,”. Af ter this they served us refreshments which were cake with valentine hearts on it and grape juice. We then gave yells for Mrs. Matthews and the girls. Everyone had a love ly time and were thankful to Mrs. Matthews and the girls who enter tained.—Committee Emily Shearin. Dr. Cupid St. Valen tine Clinic Is Held The members of the Aurelian Springs Senior Class were delightful ly entertained by th eHigh School fa culty and their grade mother, Mrs. V. C. Matthews, last Saturday night, fct a Valentine clinic, given at the heme of Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Mat thews. Comic place cards slated the guests when they arrived. They were each asked to fill out a Valentine iiagnosis chart. Five rounds of heart lice were then played. The high score prize was awarded to Cecil Hux. Other interesting games were ilso enjoyed. Delicious refreshments were ser ved carrying out the color scheme of red and white. The Seniors who enjoyed this treat acre Misses Tempie Carter, Helen Saunders, Anna Harper, Hannah Ileptinstall, Annie Pearl Crawley, Mary Davis Alston, Joyce Stallings’ and Dorethea Matthews, Messrs Au stin Dickens, Raymond Hawkins, Leonard Chichester, William Arring ton, Peter Dickens, William Thorne and Perkins Crawley. Primary Newt The beginners had a lovely time Friday celebrating St. Valentine’s Day. They had made their room bright and pretty with red crepe pa per , white hearts and a beautiful mail box filled with valentines. Their grade mother, Mrs. Taylor brought a beautiful box of Valentine candy. The children sang Valentine songs and told stories. Then each child made a Valentine for his mother. Sopie of the county teachers with Miss Cherry visited the beginners room on Wednesday. They observed the little folks eating their oatmeal and enjoying a real social period. The beginners are enjoying a “Keep Clean Parade” in their room. They have a picture of a home and a school on the board. They cut out pictures representing themselves and each day if they have carried out the health rules of the Fairy Health Club they are allowed to march. Each child is trying to get to school first by being the clean est. Harry Miller and Mildred Price are leading the parade. SECOND GRADE NEWS For the past two weeks many chil dren have been out on account of sickness. We miss them very much and hope they will soon be back with us.
