Messrs E. L. Travis Jr. and Leon
idas Hux left Tuesday morning for
Nags Head, wher ethey expect to en
joy fishing.

weeks.
Mrs. E. L. Travis, Jr., went to Scot
land Neck Thursday for a visit with
her mother, Mrs. W. W. Kitchen.

Stedman gave each of the guests of
honor packages of tinted facial tis
sues. The high score prize, a week
end size of toiletries, went to Mrs.
Quentin Gregory. Consolation was
given Miss Ida Mae Cheatham. This
was a miniature manicure set.
Mrs. Arch Cheatham and Miss Bes
sie Gibbs Cheatham of Durham with
Mrs. Goode Cheatham of Henderson
spent Sunday with the R. L. Apple
whites here. They brought with them
Miss Ida Shaw Applewhite who has
been a visitor in Durham for the past
two weeks. Miss Ida Mae Cheatham
returned to Durham to remain there
until the school session begins.
Mrs. Susie N. Ferguson, who has
spent the past two weeks in Edenton
with Mrs. Jesse Powell, returned on
Sunday afternoon: Mrs. Powell and
three childlren brought Mrs. Furger
ion and will remain with her for a
short visit.

Raleigh, July 23.—While Building
and Loan Associations in North
Carolina have felt the stress of the
economic depression during the last
year or two, every one of the 235
associations have successfuly weath
ered the storm and are so far in
good working condition, O. K. La
Roque, deputy Insurance Commis
sioner, in charge of Building and
Loan division, said in a recent state
ment.
Halifax County, the report shows,
has five associations, oire each at
Roanoke Rapids, Scotland Neck, Rose
mary, Weldon and Enfield, with com
bined resources of $1,016,789, and
with 20,442 shares of stock in force
at the end of the year. These associa
tions during the year financed the!
erection of 47 homes, with a total i
valuation of $135,600. At the end of
the year they had 954 shareholders.
At the end of business last year,
these associations had assets of $92,
192,373.69 and had a total of 1,869,
291 outstanding at that time, a re
port issued a short time ago shows.
These associations had financed dur
ing the year 4,490 homes, valued at
STl 3,135,440.92, or an average cost of
$2,925.48 per home. It is interesting
to note that the average home fin
anced cost about $162 more in 1930
than it did in 1929.
White members numbered 83,303
and colored members 12,612. Loans
made during the year amounted to
$23,077,548.64, loans retired totaled
$37,043,591.76, and stock retired $27,
594,729.24, while profits paid on ma
tured and withdrawn stock reached
$3,295,250.36; on running shares and
full paid stock the profits were $1,
342,206.56, and the interest on bor
rowed money $227,682.17.
