OFFICERS SEEKING STORE ROBBERS VV V V. V W -.-TT f T *****£*** Local Drug Store Latest Victim Of Gang Raids Money and merchandise amount ing to more than S100 in value was stolen from Taylor-Matthews Drug Co., sometime early Monday morning. The time of the robbery is set at about 2 a. m. A light near the safe which is supposed to burn all night, was out at this time, ac cording to Folice Jeff Welch, who said he thought it ha d burned our. He tried the back and front doors and found them both locked. It is thought the thieves were probably in the store at this time. Entrance was gained thru the coal chute, the window being broken open. It was an easy mat ter then to reach the upstairs from this basement entrance. In the cash registers were about fifty dollars in currency and sil ver which represented the change and Sunday business of the store. A significant fact is that only on Sunday night is there no check-up with the cash placed in the safe. In the future Mr. Matthews asserts this will not be overlooked. With a large shipment of cig arettes coming in Saturday, it is difficult to check up the exact amount missing. This seems to be a favorite item of loot, as it can be turned into ready cash by sell ing at a discount most anywhere, without fear of a mark as stolen property. Some candy was also taken, the amount unknown and it is possible a close check will shov other merchandise gone. Officers are working on. several clues and promise early arrests. Such was the case when Simeon Garris and Clarence Mayton were taken into custody by local offi cers two days after the Roanoke Rapids Grocery Co., was robbed several days ago. About $50 worth of merchandise including three hams, lard, flour and cigarettes were taken from Mr. Cleaton’s store. The stolen goods were tracked to a North ampton hangout and Garris and Mayton arrested. Officers say they confessed to the robbery. Both are under $400 bonds, being held to Superior Court by Mayor Jenkins. Two others, Ralph and Thurman Mayon, wanted in connection with the Cleaton robbery, have not yet been captured. Garris had only been out of the penitentiary a week after serving a sentence for house breaking. , j | MONDAY P. M. ESCAPED CONVICT’S CAPTURE LEADS TO STORE ROBBERS The capture of Willie Taylor, escaped convict, who had come hack in a stolen car, led to the so '•it’on of the Cleaton robbery here and the arrest of Simeon Garris , ud Clarence Mayton. About the time the Cleaton store was being robbed, Officers Gray and Welch arrested two worn0" who had been cruising up and down Roanoke Rcoids streets. Of ficers think now they were wait ing for the thieves at the time. The women were in a stolen car with a false set of license tags. On trial the women admitted tVa car had been used by Taylor in escaping from a road gang. Officers trailed Taylor to a house in Northampton, used as a rendezvous for gang members and escaped convicts. He was arrested and in searching around, the of ftioers found one of the hams stolen from the Roanoke Ranid" Grocery Co , and evidence of more of the stolen goods. It was in this way Garris and Mayton were caught and later confessed. About 3 a. m., this past Sunday morning, it appeared lightning might strike twice in the same place. As Officer Welch turned in the alley which leads past the R. R. Grocery Co., he saw a car park ed back of that store. Several persons had alighted and the en gine was still running. He reports they rushed back to the car and made a getaway. They doubled back a few minutes later but when they saw him again they fled. He says the car was a green sedan and there were about <4our people in it. He caught a glimpse of the license plate which was a North Carolina one, but the last three numbers were covered with mud.
