Harvey Speight, 27, former Roa noke Rapids boy and son of C. H. Speight of this city, was killed near Raleigh last night when a motorcycle he was driving smash ed into a parked truck. William B. Thurston, IS), of Bol ton and a State College student, who was riding behind Speight, was also killed. The accident occured on Route DO one mile east of Raleigh at 8 o’clock last night. C. II. Speight, father, and Ted Speight, brother left this morning with W. C. Williams for Raleigh to bring the body hack here for buri al. Funeral services will probably be held this Friday. Thurston cied a few minutes af ter reaching the Rex hospital in Raleigh, buf Speight was thought to have chances for recovery. Fie was conscious until after reaching the hospital Internal injuries were respon sible for hi ; death. His arm was also broken. Accord ng to the Wake County Coroner, Arthur Williams, coloied driver for A. Gomez, Raliegh stone contractor, had driven a Gomez truck partly off the highway to fix a puncture. Two wheels of the turck were on the concrete and the truck lights were off. The truck was loaded with stone ri lie un to] cycle crashed into the! rear of the truck, Speight evident- ' iy not seeing it as the tail light , was not burning. Both boys were | thrown violently to the pavement. Williams was ordered held under $500 bond by the Coroner. The two boys had been to Wil son trying to find employment. Thurston was a student in elec- I trieal engineering at State College, i Harvey Speight left Roanoke Rapids about five years ago and was employed for several years as tobacco buyer by the Ligget and Myers Tobacco Co. He is mar ried and leaves his wife and one thild. Surviving here are his father and step-mother and four broth ers aid three sisters: H. B., Wil liam, i’orman and Randolph; Mar garet, .i/isephine and Mary. Accordiio- to news received at press time, the funeral will be held Friday afternoon in the chapel of W, C. Williams Funeral home. Death came at 2:30 this morn iife, due t > internal injuries, un suspected at the time he was brought to the hospital. Car Hits Child Bobby Bright, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bright, 40 Madison j Street, was hit by a car driven I by Clyde Ranhorn Saturday af / ternoon. The car had driven into a drive way at the side of the Bright home and when Ranhorn started to back out the child was in the back of the car. His mother screamed and brakes were applied. The rear bumper knocked the child down and it received a cut on one knee and several bruises. Convict Killed E. R. Cole, convict at Caledonia SfFarm, was killed today as he and another attempted to escape from the prison farm. Cole, a desperate criminal from Waterbury, Conn., was under a fifteen year sentence. i Oscar Hylpon, who attempted to escape with Cole, was badly wound ed. Loy Buried On Sunday Near Burlington Mrs. J. A. Loy, aged 70, moth er of H. S. Loy, of this city, died at noon Saturday from a heart at tack. She was stricken only a few hours befoie her death. Mr. and Mrs. Loy left Roanoke Rapids Saturday morning fo1' Burlington. Her husband six ; ons and two daughters survive. Funeral serv ices were held Sunday afternoon at Mt. Hermon M. E.
