STATE NEWS — ' ~ Succeeds Late Frank Nish L The North Carolina Supreme Court, meeting in extra session on Wednesday of last week, elected Edward Murray, marshal of the court, as acting clerk, succeeding the late Frank Nash, who died last Sunday week. Mr. Murray, native of Nash county, has beei. connected with the court for 14 years, during which time he studi ed law and received his license m I'JilO. He has served as marshal for a year or more, succeeding Delaney Haywood. The court announced that tne place of marshal will not be fill ed now, any further appointments j waiting until fall, “pending ad justment of the State’s finances.” Resolutions of respect were adopt ed for Mr. Nash, who was consid ered one of the ablest lawyers, most profound thinkers and best citizens in the State. He was born in Tarboro and was mayo r of thn city, as well as Hillsboro, in which he practiced law for many years, and was assistant Attorney Gener al f ,r several years, prior to his selection as court e’erk. He as descendant of Governor William Brr.df; rd of the I lymouth Colony, and of Governor Abner Nash, sec ond Governor of North Carolina under the Constitution of 1780. Confesses Before Electrocution 1’lato Edncy, Hendersonville bar ber, confessed to shooting his wife in their home, pu. posely and de liberately, a few minutes before 1 the switch was thrown that snuff ed out his life at State’s Prison Friday morning, th e first white man to be electrocuted in this State in more than two years and the 120th man to die in the chair since it was installed in 1910. Edney had maintained to the last few minutes before his death that the shooting, which injured two of his children, was accident al. He w as backed at the trial by his brothers. But he stated that he killeo his wife because she ran away with another man and i he’d rather be dead than for her to raise his children. He went to the beyond with a prayer on his lips. FISH MUDDLE FRIDAY The Men's Baraca Class of the First Baptist Church entertained as special guests the Fidelis Class Friday night at Baird’s Grove with a fish muddle. The ladies who attended fuinished a picnic lunch and the group enjoyed the occasion very much. About forty people were present. HER 17th BIRTHDAY j Miss Josephine Taylor entertain ed a few of her friends at her home on Madison Street Saturday night in honor of here seventeenth birthday. The guests played games then refreshments consisting of ice cream and cakes were served. The hostess received a number of presents from her friends. Those present were: Misses Beulah Kidd, Mildred Moss, Emma Mills, Nellie Mae Jernigan, Ruby Brown, Kath erine Kidd, Rosa Williams, Ellen Taylor, Daisy Gray, Louise Evans, Mildred Shackleford, Ophelia Dan iel, Messrs Charlie Butts, Leonard Langston, Theo Smith Claudie Tay lor, Johnnie Gossett Edward Tay lor, Roger Hatchell, Jake Jenkins, Ollie Acree, Howard Simpson, Jas. Cannon and George Baird. Paired With Dempsey Lina Basquette, Riverside, Calif., randeville star, is reported as a pos sible companion of former-cham pion Jack Dempsey in a trip to the iltar soon.
