UP AND DOWN Ghe Avenue WITH THE EDITOR Roseneath, Hollister, Halifax and Dawson Clubs held community canning for their school lunches last week. Cannings for this week are scheduled for Halifax, (pickle demonstration) Roseneath Har drawee and Hobgood. A site of 1,500 to 2,000 acres in Eastern North Carolina is being sought by State Forester J. S. Holmes as a branch experiment forest station of the Applachain Forest Experiment Station, Ashe ville. Letters have gone to county commissioners and prominent citi zens in several counties, asking if a tract suitable, probably being held or taxes, cannot be secured for the purpose. Cabarrus is the first and Gran ville the second county to remit to the State their initial payments on collections of the 15 cent ad val orem tax for the year, 1932. Ca barrus has about completely paid up the 1931 tax, as have several other counties, but some still owe about half the amount due and sev eral one-third, State treasurer, John 1*. Stedman reports. Halifax county, due $58,618.00 on the orig inal estimate, had paid $44,643.50 up to last Saturday night, Treasur er Stedman said. Messrs Clyde Martin, Harvey Hazlewood and Jack DeVane have returned from a week-end fishing trip to Minnesott Beach. Regardless of the claims of the others, - Jack reports he caught most of the fish. The Herald is in receipt of a copy of the Golden Anniversary Edition of the Scotland Neck Com monwealth. This county paper was founded in 1882 and to celebrate the 50th birthday, Editor Madry has put on a splendid gO page edi tion. The Herald congratulates the owners and staff of the Com monwealth and wishes for them many prosperous birthdays. Fire Chief E. R. Myrick and firemen W. T. Dixon and C. H. Smith were delegates from the lo cal department to the State Fire > Convention at Hamlet August 1 to 4. The two clubs are meeting at the Chockoyotte Country Club, where George Taylor, chairman of the hou: committee is serving barbecue and Brunswick stew to sixty guests. Ray Goodman is in charge of the program which includes an ath letci meet between the men of the tv. o clubs. A standing broad jump with all entered, a three legged race with two teams trom each town, potato races, a golf driving canto t between members of both clubs who have never hit a golf hall before and a tug of war be tween the two clubs is on the pro gram. & u! table prizes, furnished by Roanoke Rapids business men, will he given in each event. The Weldon club had the Roa noke Rapids organization as their guests a few months ago. GUN TOTER ARRESTED Upon information that C. M. Dunn was flashing a pistol here and in Northampton County across the river, he was arrested near the Roanoke Rapids depot last night Officers Green and Welch made the arrest and a search revealed Dunn had the gun with him. He waived preliminary hearing and was placed under a $100 bond for Recorders Court. Dunn fur nished a cash bond. He is from Charleyhope, Va. men attended from the State and the local delegates report a very successful convention. The M. System Store has moved two doors north to the building formerly occupied by S. C. Cook. The Kidd Ice Cream Company of Roanoke Rapids has an import ant announcement in this issue. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Riggan an nounce the marriage of their daughter, Annie Mae, to Johnnie C. Brigman, on August 5th, at Ports mouth, Va. MfT and Mrs. W. L. Kee and Mrs. Fenton Johnson attended the funeral of Mrs. Kee’s sister at Sea board Sunday. C. E. Matthews is visiting re latives at Shelby, N. C. Charles Curtis, greets the crowd. LOCAL MEN CLEARED OF MURDER SUSPICION George Smith. Willie Jones and Robert Moore, all of this city, were evidently absolved of any connec tion with the fatal killing of Otho I). Lyon, Sr., farmer and filling station operator in Granville County last week. Two men are held in the Dur ham County jail in connection with the killing. They are Buster Mc Queen and Roosevelt Thompson. The third member of the party. Blister Baker, colored, is being sought. He Is believed to lie in Halifax County. Sheriff Davis and deputies from Oxford were in this county Tuesday night and with Sheriff Johnson and Halifax depu ties conducted a search near Scot land Neck. Baker is from Rocky Mount but has relatives in this county. His mother says he admitted being in the party but said he did not do the shooting. After the murder, she says he fled when he realized the other two were going to foist the blame on him. He had not been found today. Wins Election “..*1 After beating every team in the diminution for the Stale cham pionship, the Roanoke Rapids Ju nior Legion team withdrew from the race wlun protests were made as to the ages of certain players. The local Legion Tost promptly protested the ages of two Durham and three Gastonia players, but was unable to furnish proof. Late news dispatches state the members of these two teams were able to furnish satisfactory cer tificates. They played one game Tuesday to decide the race and Gastonia won. State Legion officials are mak ing a thorough investigation of 1 every boy on the Gastonia team ■before sending them to 'South | Carolina for the regionats next ! week. ft 'M I’GETE STOGY INSIDE— MRS. LITTLE DIES HERE Mrs. Elizabeth Little, age 74, died last night at 8:30 at the home of her grandson, George I’owell, in South Rosemary. Funeral services were held this afternono at 3 p. m., with a short service at the home by Rev. Foun tain of Weldon and interment was in Northampton County, native county of the deceased. Mrs. Little has scores of re latives in Roanoke Rapids, Hali fax and Northampton counties. Returns To Find Old Warrant Open Curley Lacey, colored, who left these parts in April, 1931, returned and was arrested last night on a larceny charge of that date. He was charged with stealing wrench es from a local car. Magistrate Thompson released him after h e paid for the wrenches and the cost of the court. Marvin Chambliss and Miss Ophelia Chambliss spent the week end in Lawrenceville visiting re latives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Reid, who are attending summer school at Chapel Hill spent the week-end here. Mrs. W. C. Bagwell and daugh ter, Mae Belle of Spartanburg, S. C., spent the week-end with Miss Ruth Case. Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Riddles and daughter Eloise of Hillsboro, spent the week-end with Mrs. Riddle’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wood.
