Henry Ford is not going to be

Hoover. Bill Edwards, manager
of the Tri dry Motor Co., local
Ford dealers, is telling the world
he is for Roosevelt, despite Mr.
Ford’s orders and speeches. Bill
has a big picture of Franklin D.
in his show window, has sent a
contribution to the State cam
paign fund and has written Demo
cratic headquarters for more signs
and literature. '
Willy Pope, age 60, was electro
cuted on Franklin Road yester
day afternoon when he took hold
of a well-augur which was lean
ing against a 2,300 volt power
line.
A. B. Williams, -who was work
ing with Pope cleaning out a well
was knocked down by the current
but was saved brause he did not
get a firm grip on the bit.
He tried to pull Pope away and
was knocked dowln again. Mrs.
Williams put a coat thru Pope’s
arms and with her husband jerked
the prisoner away from the bit.
A call was sent in to the First
Aid crew of the Power Co., and
this crew worked for five hours
with doctors at the hospital, in a
vain effort to bring Pope to life.
He was pronounced dead at 7
p. m., yesterday.

Hoover voters in The Herald
poll continued their drive for votes
during the week and contributed
as many as the Roosevelt support
ers. The total vote today is
Roosevelt 43 and Hoover 11. This
is the last ballot to be printed and
all must be in this office by Nov.
2nd.
Hoover ran a poor third in the
poll of the Junior Class at the lo
cal High School held this week.
The total vote was Roosevelt 26,

RED CROSS DRIVE
A brief report on the many calls
made on the local chapter of the
American Red Cross is given in
this issue.
The major work during the past
year has been in the distribution
of flour by volunteer workers but
almost every day there has been
call for food, clothing and trans
portation.

Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Britton an
nounce the birth of a daughter,
Barbara Louise, at Roanoke Ra
pids hospital.
The Roanoke Rapids Kiwanis
Club again won first prize for the
best entertainment at the district
meeting in Tarboro Tuesday night.
Led by Steve Lipscomb, the local
club gave the Toreador scene from
Carmen. Fletcher Dickens and
Howard Pruden were the bull. J.
T. Chase was Interlocutor. Oth

wanians and guests were present
from Tarboro, Rocky Mount, En
field, Ahoskie, Williamston, Eliza
beth City and Roanoke Rapids.
Geo. Sheers of Matton 111., had
fiis first tooth pulled on his 100th
jirthday.
There is no improvement in the
condition of Becky Daughtrey, ac
cording to news received this af
ternoon from the Richmond hos
pital where he underwent a major
operation Tuesday.
His back is broken and he is
paralyzed as a result of an auto
crash Saturday night, when he
sought to avoid hitting a cart
which was traveling without lights
J. R. Manning, who was riding
on the front seat with Becky, is
able to be out after two days in
the hospital at Henderson with se
vere cuts and bruises.
Attending doctors at Richmond
say it may be several days before
they can determine Beckys condi
tion and chances for recovery.

Returned Missionary
At Methodist Church
Miss Josephine Dameron, a mis
sionary ,who has spent several
years in Korea doing missionary
work under the direction of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, South
will speak next Sunday evening
at the regular services at the
First Methodist Church of Roa
noke Rapids. Miss Dameron is a
native of Warrenton.
In her address it is understood
she will display a number of the
native Korean costumes, using for
this purpose several of the young
people of the church who will be
dressed in these costumes and will
appear before the congregation
during the course of the addrdess.
The public is cordially invited to
attend this service Sunday evening
at 7:30.
The Board of Directors of the
N. C. Hospital for the Insane broke
all precedents Tuesday by elevat
ing a member of the staff to suc
ceed the late Dr. Albert Ander
son, superintendent. Dr. Julian
IV. Ashby was unanimously elect
ed. Other names were discussed,
including that of Dr. T. W. M.
Long, but the only nomination pre
sented to them was that of Dr.
Ashby.
In the midst of a recent funer-.
al in one of the local churches, the
congregation was startled when,
with !a loud crash, one of the
swinging doors in the ehurch fell
to the floor.
St. Mary’s Guild of All Saints
Episcopal Church will hold its an
nual Turkey dinner from 6 to 8
p. m., on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in
the building formerly occupied by
W. C. Williams. The dinner is
fifty cents.
