Work Starts Next Month White Boy Kills Negro Thomas Williams, 19-year o 1 d white youth, fired a bullet into the stomach of Berry Robertson, Jr., 22-year old colored man of En field Saturday shortly after mid night as the result of an alleged drunken argument which ensued during the progress, of a “mixed” colored and white party in which it is said bo® sexes took part in a “joint” on the outskirts of the Negro section of the city. Robert son died shortly thereafter from the bullet wound. Murder charges will probably be filed against the young white man. He voluntarily gave himself up to t h e deputy sheriff in Enfield following the quarrel. Exact details of the affair could not be found out here but it is said that Williams and a crowd of his friends were gathered at the Ne gro shack and had been drinking when he and the colored man had differences. Robertson was taken to bis home by friends. A doctor was not summoned because his condition was so critical when they reached his home that his friends said they , were sure he would die in spite of medical aid. Little more than a year ago the Negro was wounded with a bullet I just an inch above the place in his abdomen where the single shot fir ed by Williams entered. An inquest was held unnencessary because ( Williams gave up and volunteered all details of the affair to the sher- 1 iff’s office. He is at liberty under 1 bond. 1 j Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Saunders of Roanoke Ra nds is conductor and members lave been chosen from Kinston, tocky Mount, Wilson, Nashville, md Roanoke Rapids. They have tiven concerts in all of these cities, ind will return to Roanoke Rapids or another concert later in the rear. The program here Sunday was if beautiful numbers dedicated to he George Washington Bicenten nal in six well arranged composi ions. At six o’clock all of the mem »ers of the band were guests of he Kiwanis Club at the Domestic Science building where the High School girls had prepared a splen lid five course dinner. COUNCIL FORMED Miss Annie Cherry, rural school supervisor of Halifax County call ed a meeting of all the Parent Teacher Association presidents of the rural and city schools for the purpose of organizing a Parent. Teacher Association Council. The meeting was held in Halifax Satur day from 10 to 12:30 and a good representation |frhm the various schools were present. The follow ing officers were electd: Presi dent, Mrs. Quentin Gregory, Ha lifax; Vice President, Mrs. Thos. H. Holmes of Weldon; Secretary and Treasurer, Mrs. A. L. Clark, Roanoke Rapids and Mrs. Lewis Butts of the Darlington school was elected Auditor-Historian. Meetings will be held four times each year and the constitution adopted was as follows: “The object of this federation is to correlate the work of the State branch and the local associations: The Reconstruction Finance Cor* po ration yesterday gave official approval to the bids on the build ing of the Roanoke Rapids Sani tary District and authorized the necessary funds for the project. A. J. Young, chairman, and H. D. Camp, secretary, of the Sani tary District Board, with J. R. Allsbrook, the Board’s attornley, and Sanitary Engineer Lewis, were before the Board all day yester day answering questions, signing the necessary papers and awaiting the final approval which came af ter dark last night. .^.vjhc ctinti'aci. The water and sewerage system in the district was let to the Fiske-Carter Co., of Spartanburg, S. C. This company was also awarded several smaller contracts including the building of a foun dation and erection of a tower and tank and the erection of a sew erage pumping station. The Fiske-Carter Co. bid $92, 149.40 on the water system, $72, 534.47 on the sewerage system, $4, 800 on the tower tank installation, $3,985.20 on the pumping station. Carl G. Semendinger represent ed the Fiske-Carter Co. Fiske - Carter representatives here tonight stated work would start on their part of the project the first part of January. DANCE AT CLUB FRI. An All-Conference dance will be held at the Chockoyotte Country Club Friday night from 9 until I in honor of the 1932 all Northeast ern football team. The joyful affair will be climax ed by a grand march with special dance numbers. The Local Rythm Makers, con sisting of eight pieces will fur-nish music. Admittance will be by card only. The dance is to be well chaperoned. Proceeds for the local athletic club. to afford an opportunity for the various associations to unify their work and increase their efficiency, and to harmonize the efforts of parents and teachers through an Earnest cooperation with the boards of education and the sup erintendents of schools.
