BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK
Six boys and girls high school
basketball teams will fight it out
in the Roanoke Rapids Kiwanis
Club Northampton and Halifax
County basketball tournament here
February 3rd and 4th in the high
school gym.
There will be a trophy awarded
to the winner of the champion
boys team and also champion girls
team.
The schools entered are: Rich
Square, Woodland, Severn, Aure
lian Springs, Weldon and Conway.
The first games will be played
Friday afternoon at 3:30 P. M.
when a double bill will see Rich
Square and Severn girls teams
open the show, following this game
Woodland and Aurelian Spring
boys teams will clash to wind up
the afternoon program. The same
day at 7 30 P. M. will see a triple
header, Conway girls clashing with
the Weldon skirts. The Conway
boys meeting the Rich Square boys
team, and Woodland girls playing
the Auelina Spings sextet.
Satuday afternoon at 3:00 P. M.

WIN TWO
Coach Cheek’s Yellow Jacket
Gagers got off to a good start last
week winning two games and drop
ping one.
Among their victories included
Hertford which was a district elim
inaiton game in the State race.
Playing on a poorly court and
handicapped by their opponents ad
vantage in height the Jackets were
swamped 2T-G. Tuesday night on
the Conway High’s Court, Conway
won the State crown last season,
and have another crack team this
season.
The Jax boys and girls won a
double bill Wednesday night at
Henderson’s High’s expense the
boys edged cut by a 16-19 count.
Newton and W. Dickens featured
for the locals.
The skats ran wild with a 87-18
score, Lelia Murray and Lois
Stansbury bagged most points,
while Mills and Tudor also per
formed well.
Friday night the Jackets took
Hertford high in store nosing out
by a 18-21 victory, this was the lo
cals first win in the State race.
Phillip Newton, I. Dickens and W.
Dickens led the Jackets, Allsbrook
and Y. Brown also showed good
form. The skirts dropped a hard
fought game to the Aurelian
Springs sextette 16-20 to wind up
the week’s cage bill.

TEAM BOWS
TO SPRINGS
The Aurelian Springs high
School girls defeated Roanoke
Rapids high girls, Friday night,
January 18, in one of the hardest
fought basketball games of the
season.
Aurelian Springs girls led the
scoring from start to finish. Ruth
Hamlet, a forward for Aurelian
Springs tallied 14 points for top
honors. The final score for the
girls: Aurelian Springs, 20; Roa
noke Rapids, 16.
Aurelian Springs girls have
played four games, won 2, tied 1,
and lost 1.
Up to the present date the Aure
lian Springs boys have played 13
games. Seven of these have been
won. Other games scheduled are
with Littleton, Macon, and Jack
son.
On the boy’s team those leading
are Henry Liles, Allen Carter,
Lewis Saunders, Wilson Warren
Dudley Powlel, Henry Fowler, J.
W. Lewis, Raymond Williams,
Stedman Hux, Edward Harrill,
Leon Knight, Howerton Hardy,
Randolph Crowby, Jack Crawley,
Randolph Tharrington, and Fergu
son Smith.
Mr. Clary is working daily with
the reserves and has some promi
nent material in the making.
MRS. EDMONDSON HOSTESS
On Tuesday evening of this week
Mrs. Bernard Edmondson was
hostess to her bridge club at the
home of Mrs. V. T. Lamm on Roa
noke Avenue.
Mrs. ’Gene Wilson was given a
potted plant for high score and
Miss Edna Wofford a box of soap
as low score prize. A salad course
was served at ten-thirty. Those
making up the tables were: Mes
dames Gene Wilson, A1 'George,
Paul Weeks, Zollie Powell, Bill
Alligood, Clyde Liske, Dick Brown,
Ivy Mohom, Lester Edmondson,
George Lampley, Miss Myrtle Lip

On Friday night, January 20,
Aurelian Springs girls basket ball
team played Roanoke Rapids team.
The game was played fair and
square, with Aurelian Springs win
ning, the score being 20 to 16.
CAGERS
TRAVEL
The Red Devils and the Yellow
Jacket Cage Teams will take to
the road this week.
The Jacket will get a two day
trip staying over in Elizabeth City
Friday night for a tussle with
Elizabeth City high quint in the
State elimination basket ball race.
Hertford will entertain the Jax
Saturday night in the other dis
trict game. The locals took their
first tilt from Hertford needing
two more wins to clinch the dis
trict championship.
Taking a severe licking by the
Quality Shop Sunday the Red Dev
ils will play Hopewell Tubize in
Hopewell Saturday night. The
Hopewell quint won over the Dev
ils in their first game but with
new faces in the locals line-up they
should give them plenty competi
tion. Wednesday night will see the
Devils playing at Fremont in a re
turn game. Fremont gave the
Devils a good game here last week,
the locals nosing out by one point.

Word was received here Tuesday
of the death of Mrs. Hurley King’s
mother in Concord, N. C. Mrs.
King and children were called
there about ten days ago on ac
count of her illness.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Weeks were
week-end visitors in Rocky Mount.
DEVILS
WIN TWO
The Red Devils cage team add
ed two victories to their list and
one defeat in their last three tus
les, Thursday night with two new
members, Allen and Garner in the
line-up the locals subdued the Rich
Square All-Stars quint 34-16 on the
local floor, Allen and Cheek took
high score honors, with Taylor top
ping the visitors.
Saturday nights tilt also played
here was a real thriller. The Dev
ils nosed out Fremont All-Stars
27-26, this was a nip and tuck af
far. F. Dickens and Cheek with
10 points each were high score
tossers, Flowers with 8 points,
Lane and B. Peacock with 6 were
the visitors high scorers.

Shop Quint 65-18 in a loose affair.
The Quality boys averaged 6 feet
for their entire team, and with
three regulars out of the line-up
the Devils showed little opposition.
F. Dickens bagged 10 points for
high score honors. Weed tallied
20 points for the high light of the
winners attack.
