Next Week At The Peoples TWO JACK OAKIE FILMS NEXT WEEK The Peoples Theatre presents two pictures featuring Jack Oakie, j popular Paramount comedian next week. This versatile chap is first seen in “From Hell to Heaven,” in which he appears with Carole Lom bard and David-Manners, and which is shown! at the Peoples Wednes day only, and Thursday and Friday he again comes to the Peoples’ screen in “Uptown New York.” Oakie is shown above in two scenes from the pictures. PEOPLES PROGRAM In spite of the fact that two very excellent stage productions will be presented at the Peoples Theatre next week, the “high spot” on next week’s program is the glad news that Roanoke Rapids audi ences will have an opportunity to see Eddie Cantor in “The Kid from Spain” Monday and Tuesday. This latest comedy of the little pop-eyed comedian had been haled by critics far and wide as being his greatest entertainment, and “The Kid From Spain,” starring the inimitable Eddie, has been looked forward to ever since an nouncement was made that Cantor had made the film, though Roa noke Rapids is one of the first Carolina towns to get the picture. Following the feature presenta tion of the Cantor film at the Downtown house Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday’s bill prom ises to be most interesting on both stage and screen. For on this day, “From Hell to Heaven,” will be shown on the screen, in addition to a stage presentation of “Sea bee” Hayworth, described as “The South’s Premier Black-face Come dian” and his company of talented entertainers. Her husband faced with impris onment, Adrienne Ames is one of eleven who pit their luck against fate in “From Hell to Heaven,” Paramount’s drama of race-track follies and fortunes, offering in addition to Adrienne, Carole Lom bard, Jack Oakie and David Man ners. For the Thursday and Friday screen attraction, Jack Oakie once more returns to the screen, this time in “Uptown New York,” which is said to be a fast-moving comedy of the Metropolitan cen ter, featuring an all-star cast. This in addition to the “Mad Merry Maniacs,” stage presentation. Hoot Gibson completes the week on the screen at the Peoples with his “horse opera” Cowboy Coun sellor, Saturday of next week, on which day Bob Robinson and his “Mad Merry Maniacs” Company finishes their 3-day engagement in the city. Two Revues Booked For Next Week At Peoples Theatre With vaudeville and stage pres entations seemingly decidedly in favor with local theater-goers, the Peoples again offer two complete stage shows for next week. The first company, will be seen from the Peoples stage for one day only. On Wednesday, “Sea bee” Hayworth, haled as the South’s premier black-face come dian appears with his full com pany in a stage presentation show. Mr. Hayworth is said to have a company of capable stage artists and entertainers, in fact, his show has been so popular in Eastern cities in which he has recently ap peared that it was possible to get only a one-day engagement of his I show. | Thursday will be Bob Robinson’s introduction to Roanoke Rapids, together with his company of 25, which is billed as the “Mad Merry Maniacs.” If “Bob” heeds an in troduction to this city, there is many places where he doesn’t, for according to press reports, he and his company of 25 artists have played a great number of the lar ger show towns in the East with a most creditable record. Highlights of the “Mad Merry Maniacs” include: Chet Nelson and Gertrude Parish in a skit that never fails to “bring down the house” according to press reports. Chet gives a marvelous character ization of a “wicked old man,” and finishes up with a beautiful num ber on the guitar. Rex Gordon and Ulah Deane furnish satire on the marriage question, and end with a pretty song for the finale. Irving Lazar shares honors with his acrobatic dance numbers, while Mabel Hard ing (from Hollywood) is not only versatile as a dancer, singer and comedienne, but is extremely easy to look upon. Other acts featured with the “Mad Merry Maniacs” are most too numerous to mention, but fur nish an hour of good, clean, whole some amusement that will be en joyed by every member of the family. The show, featuring Bob Robinson in person fills a last-half engagement at the Peoples next week, beginning on Thursday and ending Friday, in addition to the regular picture program. LADIES’ AID SOCIETY The Ladies’ Aid Society of the Roanoke Rapids First Baptist Church met at the home of Mrs. Frank Williams Tuesday after noon. Prayer was lead by Mrs. W. C. Allsbrook.
