He ar rived on foot because he had no car-fare. His shoes were sadly worn and his clothing umkempt and covered with dust. One would say that these disadvantages were enough to disqualify him for suc cess in a town so smart and crit ical, but he had other handicaps more fundamental. He was too short and thickset to Y impres sive; his eyes had a decided squint; altogether he was not at all the kind of a man who commands re spect before a crowd. The principal business of the clever gentlemen of that city was standing around the market-place, there to “hear or to tell some new thing.” They were the joke-mak ers and fashion-setters of their era. As for investing in a new religion—they had hundreds of re ligions, some new, some faily new, some old, but all entirely unused. A fine appreciative atmosphere for the foreign visitor named Paul. Straight on he marched until he reached Mars Hill. A few of the clever ones gathered about. The critical moment had come. Paul must say something, and no mat ter what he said, it would be wrong. Suppose he had said: “Good morning, gentlemen, I have something new in the way of a re ligion which I’d like to explain.” A boisterous laugh would have ended his talk. But Paul knew the psychology of the crowd. “Men of Athens, I congratulate you on having so many fine re ligions. I’ve traveled about quite a bit and your assortment is lar ger and better than I have seen anywhere else. I noticed that you not only have altars erected to all the regular gods and goddesses; you even have one dedicated to the Unknown God. “Let me tell you an interesting coincidence, gentlemen.- This God whom you worship without know ing his name, is the very God whom I represent.” Paul stopped short and voices called out demanding that he go on. It appears later in the narra tive that after his talk was over “some mocked, and others aid, ‘We will hear thee again of this mat ter.’ ” " It was not a complete victory such as his Master had achieved at Jacob’s well; but the audience which had confronted Paul was hostile, and his initial success so cleverly won, that this story de serves a place beside that of Je sus. Together they help us to un derstand the great mystery—how a religion, originating in a despis ed province of a petty country, could carry around the world. It conquerred not because there was any demand for another rleigion but because Jesus knew how, and taught his followers how, to trans late a great spii Itual conception into terms of practical self-con cern. A. C. C. Attorney Raleigh, Feb. 20.—J. T. Mad drey of Weldon, has been desig nated as attorney for Halifax County whose certificate of title for liens, chattels and mortgages will be accepted by the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation of Raleigh, N. C., for loans to be made to the people of this county, John P. Stedman, executive vice president and manager, announces. Mr. Stedman also announces that Miss Hardy, of Scotland Neck, has agreed to aid those of this county seeking to borrow money from the corporation in making out their applications in proper form. Fees for attorneys, paid by the applicants, are limited to one-half of one per cent of the loan, with a minimum of $1 and a maximum of $12.50, en chattels and liens, while the fees on real property will be governed by the amount of work involved in preparing the abstract and mortgage. Loans are not to be made to per sons who may be interested in agriculture and receiving the ma jor part of their income from other sources, but they will be confined to actual “dirt farmers.” It is the farm owner, too, and not the tenant farmer, who will be the beneficiary of the Regional Agri cultural Credit Corporation’s as sistance. Loans are made direct from the Raleigh office and do not have to be passed upon in Washington. Brock, of Davis, one of the few Republican legisla tors, dropped, by request, a bill into the House hopper Saturday which would greatly reduce the amount now being paid for legal advertising in the newspapers. For all such advertising the rate would be 25 cents an inch for the first 100 inches and 15 cents an inch for any over 100 inches, one column running measure. And in towns and cities with more than one newspaper, the advertis ing would have to be awarded to the lowest bidder. The measure would not apply to any existing contract, but county and municipal officers would be required to make contracts in the future on this ba sis. Itemized publication of re ceipts and disbursements of coun ties and municipalities would not be carried, the totals only being published annually, and publicly posted. Mr. Brock said the bill was pre pared by E. H. Morris, Mocksville attorney, who told him Robert S. McNeill, another Mocksville at torney, aided him in its prepara tion. Mr. Brock wants it known that he introduced the bill “by re quest,” a term used when the in troducer does not care to take credit for or sponsor a bill he in troduces.
