Raleigh. April 27. — House Bill
No. 1.372, to authorize the commis
sioner of hanks to pay over cer
tain funds of the Scotland Neck
Bank, held by him, for distribution
to depositors of that bank, on
which a hearing was held Tuesday,
was reported into the House of
Representatives favorably Wed
nesday and placed on the favor
able calendar. Unless obpections
arise, the bill will probably be
passed on its second reading
Thursday.
Dr. Long’s S. B. 596 to provide
for the appointment of trustees of
the Roanoke Rapids graded school
district to fill vacancies by the
board of trustees, to serve until
the next regular election, when an
unexpired term if filled by election
by the qualified voters in the dis
trict, received in the House Thurs
day, after passage by the Senate,
was referred to the House Educa
tion committee.
The bill is as follows:
“An Act to Amend Chapter
Forty-two, Private Laws of Nine
teen Hundred Thirty-One Relat
ing to the Election of School Trus
tees for the Board of School Trus
tees of Roanoke Rapids by the
Qualified Voters of the Roanoke
Rapids Graded School District.
“The General Assembly of North
Carolina do enact:
“Section 1: That Section four,
Chapter Forty-two, Private Laws
of Nineteen Hundred Thirty-One,
be and the same is hereby repealed
and the following enacted are sub
stituted therefor:
“Section 4: All vacancies in said
Board of Trustees caused by death,
resignation, removal from the dis
trict or otherwise shall be filled by
the remaining members of the
Board, and the person so chosen
shall serve until the next biennial
general election for trustees of the
Roanoke Rapids Graded School Dis
trict when his successor shall be
duly elected for the unexpired
term.”
The bill amending the Charter of
Scotland Neck, providing for tax
ing various activities, already pass
ed in both houses, was ratified and
became the law Wednesday.
Henderson Club
Guests In City
Mrs. T. R. Manning was hostess
Tuesday to the members of the
Tuesday Club of Henderson, N. C.,
Mrs. John Penner, Mrs. Henry
Eley, of Suffolk, Va., and Mrs.
Redley Meacham, of Petersburg,
Va., and Mrs. B. Frank Harris,
with a lovely five course luncheon.
On the center of the table was a
silver boat filled with pink tulips
and narcissi, favors for each guest
were miniature green umbrellars
filled with green and white mints.
In the afternoon at three o’clock
the Tuesday Club gave their regu
lar program at the Woman’s Club
building with the members of the
Woman’s Club and the Study Club
as honor guests. The Club house
was decorated for this occasion
by Mesdames H. S. Loy, Crawford
Hoyle, Howard Pruden, Bahnson
Weathers, Paul Heydenrick, and
Wm. Batton, these same ladies act
ing as hostesses with Mrs. Man
ning.
Mrs. D. L. Traynham, as presi
dent of the Study Club, welcomed
the Tuesday Club. Mrs. Ed. Wat
kins, president of the Henderson
club, responded and took charge of
the meeting. A very interesting
program was given.

Edward P. Mulrooney, former
Police Commissioner of New York, is
the ohairinan of that state’s “Beer
Board ’ ’. He resigned to accept the
appointment under Gov. Lehman.
Mrs. Jacob Taylor and daughter,

maturing in the amount of $2,000
on January 1, 1935, $3,000 on Jan
uary 1, 1936, $2,000 on January 1,
1937, $3,000 on January 1, 1938,
$2,000 on January 1 in each of the
years 1939 to 1944, inclusive, $5,
000 on January 1 in eaeh of the
years 1945 to 1954, inclusive, $6,
000 on January 1, 1955, $7,000
on January 1 in each of the years
1956 to 1959, inclusive, $6,000 on
January 1, 1960 and 1961, $7,000
on January 1, 1962, $6,000 on Jan
uary 1, 1963 and 1964, $4,000 on
January 1, 1965, $5,000 on January
1, 1966, $4,000 on January 1, 1967,
denomination $1,000, interest pay
able January 1st and July 1st, both
principal and interest payable in
gold in New York City. General
obligations, unlimited tax. Bonds
cannot be sold for less than par.
Successful bidder must pay accru
ed interest at the rate borne by
the bonds from the interest pay
ment date immediately preceding
the date of payment of the pur
chase price to the date of pay
ment of the purchase price. All of
the matured coupons will be cut
off and destroyed before delivery.
Award will be made to bidder nam
ing lowest rate of interest and as
between two or more bidders nam
ing same lowest rate to bidder of
fering to pay highest price there
for. Bidders will name the rate of
interest the bonds will bear, not
exceeding 6%. Bidders must pre
sent with their bids a certified
check upon an incorporated bank
or trust company payable uncon
ditionally to the order of the State
Treasurer for two percent of the
face value of bonds bid for, to se
cure the district against any loss
resulting from the failure of the
bidder to comply with the terms
of his bid. The right to reject all
bids is reserved. There will be no
auction. Bonds registerable as to
principal only. Opinion of Messrs.
Storey, Thorndike, Palmer &
Dodge, of Boston, will be furnish
ed.

Youth Wins First
Prize In Contest
George Thorne, of Aurelian
Springs, won first place in the dis
trict Young Tar Heel Farmers
public speaking contest held at
Williamston, on April 19. This be
ing a Stai-e and National Contest,
he will go to Raleigh sometime in
June to compete in the State con
test.
This club is building a log cabin
for a chapter house, which they
expect to be completed within a
short time.
On April 17th the club met and
elected officers for the coming
year. They are as follows: Presi
dent, Leon Knight; Vice-President,
George Thorne; Secretary, Michae'
Cooke; Treasurer, Marvin Taylor;
Reporter, Whit Neville; and Advis
or, E. K. Veach.
As the year draws to a close
the club feels like they have made
a lot of progress in school.

the list of property for taxes at its true value in money
at April first.

continue until April 30th, after which the legal penalty
for failure to list property will be invoked upon each
person who neglects to list his property for taxation.
