Club met on Thurs day afternoon of last week with Mrs. O. Griffin as hostess. Mrs. Steve Lipscomb held high score for the afternoon and was given a compact as a prize. After several interesting progressions a salad course was served. Those making up the tables were: Mes dames J. M. Jackson, W. C. Wil liams, Wm. I — — - ■' ■— Nearly everyone has had the suppressed desire to peep down an elevator shaft to see the in side workings and the opportun ity to do this will be furnished visitors to the Otis Elevator ex hibit, at the top of the Sky Ride at the Century of Progress in Chicago. Through shatter-proof glass panels, visitors may look straight down into the elevator hoist ways. They can watch the il luminated elevator car as it drops rapidly away into space, down into the pitch black shaft until it is a mere pin-point of light 600 feet below. Then, after a pause, they will see the steel cables be gin streaking upward again. The light will grow brighter, slowly at first, and then more rapidly until the top of the car suddenly .looms into view and comes to rest at the top landing—exactly at floor level. The automatic control equip ment, the safety devices, the powerful hoisting machines that operate these elevators are the same as those installed in the world’s greatest skyscrapers But of the millions of people who ride in office building elevators every day, few are privileged to see the elevator machine rooms. In the Sky Ride towers, how ever. these machine rooms will be open for inspection. This will be the first time the public has been invited behind the scenes to see what makes an elevator work. The motor-rooms at the tops of both towers are the Otis Ele vator Company’s contribution to the Century of Progress Expose tion. They are the highest ex hibits at the fair; N. Y. C.
