Airy For State Honors .— - - . .. —-... i i ■■ —.— ———— ■ King of^Woodchoppers Fred “Pep” Singer of Tafton, Pa., chopped a 12 inch log in 1 min ute, 55 seconds with a double-bladed arx, breaking all records and winning the Eastern championship for che second year. : Guns Lost In River Three Months Ago Found By Fishermen “Old Mother Roanoke River” plays some pretty queer tricks, at times, typical of which is the finding of two guns submerged in the water last week, that had been lost nearly three months. On February 12th, young Clar ence Cobum and Jack West over turned a small boat in the river, narrowly escaping drowning or serious injury, and lost their rifles in the accident. Monday, May 1st, their guns were found, as near as could be determined, just at the spot where they were lost, by Malcolm Dau ghtrey and Paul Matthews, two other Roanoke Rapids youths, who were fishing in the river, and who had been diving. The guns were little the worse for their three months vacation in the river, and two Roanoke Rapids youths are proud of having recovered their artillery, and after polishing them up, report that they “work like new.” Jimmie Womble is showing fans how the Yellow Jackets hit in col lege baseball, in four trips against Wake Forest Freshmen, Monday, he hit three singles and a homer. Jimmie plays for Carolina Frosh, a former Jacket star. Jax Travel To Hill Competing For Class “B” State Champ’s Baseball followers of the local high Yellow Jackets no doubt re member the exciting game at Chapel Hill last year for the State class “B” championship. The ex cellent pitching of Mt. Airy’s southpaw ace “Lefty” Dean, and their stalwart receiver, Don Ful ler, who came near licking the locals in the title game. The score ended 7-5 with Mt. Airy on the short end. Friday, May 12th again the local high Yellow Jackets will play Mt. Airy’s crack team at Chapel Hill and again Lefty Dean and Don Ful ler will be more impressive to de feat than before. Mt. Airy won the Western Cham pionship by trouncing Paw-Creek 11-2 in which Dean attributed a homer with loaded bases last week. In Friday’s game Ollie Acree will probably get the starting call for mound duty. Acree has won six games and dropped two this season, his defeats going twelve innings and by one point margins. The starting line-up for the Jax will look like this: Acree, p; Sul livan, c; Garris, lb; Allsbrook, 2b; | Grant, 3b; I. Dickens, ss; W. Dick ens, If; Starke, cf; Hardison, rf. Trapped by fire in his home, George Raley, aged 85 of Glencoe, 111., escaped by sliding down an iron pipe from the third floor. TO SAVE THAT CAR Lubricate it.
