BETTER SCHOOLS COST LESS ************************* Taxes Lowered To Operate Better Than State Standards Unnecessary To Increase Taxes For Next Year In answer to the much discussed question: “How will the operation of Roanoke Rapids schools on bet ter than state standards” effect taxes and property owners, C. W. Davis, city superintendent of schools has prepared a bulletin, from which we quote the follow ing: “How will it effect the taxes of the person who owns a home worth $5,000 if the people in Roanoke Rapids vote to have better than State standard schools? “Local taxes, 1932, were on the basis of $1.00 on each $100.00 valu ation. “For a $5,000 valuation the taxes for 1932 would have been $50. “Local taxes on same property in 1933 would show a $1,000 de crease in value, with $4,000 the new valuation. $1.00 on each $100 valuation would mean $40 taxes for 1933. “How will it effect the taxes of a person who owns a home worth $2,500? “Local taxes, 1932: $1.00 on each $100.00 valuation. $2,500 valuation, would mean $25 taxes for 1932. “Local taxes on same property, 1933: $2,500 valuation less $500 decrease in valuation would mean $2,000 new valuation. $1.00 on each $100.00 valuation would result in only $20.00 taxes for 1933. “What effect will voting for bet ter than State standard school have upon the taxes of a man who lives in a mill house and who owns a bout $200 worth of household goods? “The school taxes in this case re main identically the same, being only $2.00 for the year 1932, and $2.00 for the year 1933. “The school taxes for this per son remains the same because when the State took over the schools, to run for you the poorest schools the state will premit any com munity in North Carolina to have the State left with you the indebt edness on your buildings. “Will the man who owns a home have to help pay on school in debtedness ? “Yes! It will require at least $.65 on each $100.00 valuation to meet the obligations of indebted ness next year. This will have to be paid regardless of whether we have six months, eight months or nine months of school.” A young lady who hailed a taxi cab one evening last week in the theatre district in New York, screamed when she opened the door and found what was apparently the body of a man sprawled inside. The driver leaned from his seat, peered through the door, and then he grinned reassuringly. , “Take it easy, lady,” he said. “That’s only Grover. With this no-cruising law I ain’t been able to crash this zone for three nights. Today I stuffed an old suit of clothes and stuck it on the seat to get by the cops with. Wait just a minute and I’ll fold him up a gain. I named him 'Grover, for luck.” Empty cags aren’t allowed in the theatre zone during certain hours in New York. New Law Regulates Hours To Be Worked By Women Employees Raleigh, June 7. — Instructions on the new Crews law, effective June 1, on hours of work of wo men in stores, cafes and other businesses where any female help is employed as clerks, have been issued by Commissioner of Labor A. L. Fletcher. He points out that women work ers in such places iare limited as to hours to 10 a day and 58 a week, and that schedules may be chang ed as often as the employer desires just so he posts the schedule and initials or signs it, and no report of the change need be made to the Labor Department. The law ap plies to one clerk, if the total em ployed persons is three or more, and applies to daughters of a store or restaurant owner as to others. He also points out that the law ap plies to clerks in a telegraph of fice, since the law mentions stores, cafes “or other business where any female help is employed. . . . as clerks.” Calling at the government hall in Chivasso, Italy, to file a mar riage application, Francesco Fer rero found himself officially a wo man instead of a man, with his name listed “Francesca” instead of “Francesco.” Friday and Saturday at Leggett’s Brings Values We Know Cannot Be Duplicated Thirty Days From Now In View of Rising Markets and Higher Commodity Prices. “Buy Now!” ... is a slogan that we feel has been overworked during the last few years of economic depression, but we repeat it at this time, for we honestly feel that NOW the time is ripe to buy!
