TOWN TALK Cecil Gums spent the week-end in Franklinton with friends. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Glover, Mr. and Mrs. David Camp spent Sun day in Oak City with Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Glover. Mr. and Mrs. Willie Tidwell spent the week-end in Weldon with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Win brow. Mrs. W. S. Burnette and son, Russell, of Garysburg, spent Sat urday night with Mrs. John Baird. Mrs. Mary J. Camp is visiting relatives near Garysburg. Miss Thelma Burnette, of Garys burg, is visiting Mrs. John Baird. Mrs. Taylor Cole and daughter, Merle, and George Baird spent Sunday at Bracey, Va. Mrs. Charlie Baird, of Belmont, visited Mrs. John Baird last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gray and children, of Williamston, spent the week-end with Mrs. Lloyd Bryant. J. A. Powell of Duplin County has 700 turkey poults now in his brooder house. Green feed has been planted for their use later in the season. A community cannery has been set up at New Bern to save sur plus produce from the community relief garden. Some 6,000 cases of vegetables are expected to be can ned from the 150-acre garden. Fred Loose of Denver was given 20 days and a fine of $37.60 for beating a neighbor’s geese with a shovel. Womans Club Will Sponsor City Play Grounds For Month The Welfare Department of the Woman’s Club is sponsoring play ground activities at the Rosemary and Roanoke Rapids parks. The work began Monday morning at nine o’clock with Miss Sarah Eli zabeth Jenkins in charge of the Roanoke Rapids park and Miss Lil lian Bell Jenkins at the Rosemary park. Volunteer workers are Miss Margaret Dunning, Miss Phala Vick, Miss Lois Smith and Miss 'Virginia Akers. Girls from nine to twelve are in vited to come each morning, in cluding Saturday, at 9:00 o’clock and stay until 11:30, for the story hour and the playing of games. Mrs. Weathers, chairman of the Welfare Department, states that she does not know whether the work will continue longer than a month or not, but contributions will be gladly received for this work. If anyone desires to make such a donation, please send same to Mrs. C. F'. Ogletree, treasurer of the department. It is hoped that within the near future that a play ground can be opened at the High School for boys from nine to twelve. Dance Band Headed By Local Youth To Play At Va. Beach W. R. “Bill” Allsbrook, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Allsbrook of this city, and law student at the University of North Carolina, will open this week at the Courtney Terrace Hotel at Virginia Beach, Va., with his own dance orchestra, according to word coming from the management, and will play for special dances at the Lynx Night Club, located just opposite the Cavalier Hotel at the famous Vir ginia coast resort. This is the second season for the Roanoke Rapids lad at Virgi nia Beach, tho this year he will lead his own orchestra, composed of five fellow Carolina students, who wlil play a total of 25 instru ments. “Bill”, as he is affection ately known to his friends in this city, invites all to come and see him at the beach this season.
