Sun Causes Hi-Way “Explosion” .. M V VXXXXXXX XXX J£ X X X X X X X X V ^ •I’ ■ Slab “Buckles” Sending Concrete High Into The Air i----—-“ Tourist Injured In “Hi-Way Explosion” Weldon-Halifax Rd. A tourist, returning to his home in Massachusetts from Florida, via. the Atlantic Coastal Hi-way, had a real taste of North Caro lina warm weather last week, just before crossing the state line, on the Weldon-Halifax hi-way. As the driver passed a point in the road, the concrete “exploded” buckling a place in the slab at least 18-inches high, and sending a shower of gravel, debris and parti cles of concrete high into the air, part of which struck and injured an occupant riding on the back seat of the car. Old timers say last Friday was one of the hottest days they have experienced, particularly at this time of the year. It was undoubt edly the incessant rays of Old Sol pouring- down on the roadway that caused the explosion, which state highway officials say are not un common, despite every precaution taken to pn-event them, both in construction and m.iintainence of the highways. H. B. House, clerk with the State Ili-way department station ed at Weldon, says he witnessed a ‘'buckle” of concrete during hot weather upon one occasion, and that the explosion sounded like a gun-shot. Names of the drivers and oc cupants of the Massachusetts tour ists were not. obtained. Only one of the four occupants of the car was injured, an invalid, weighing only SO pounds. He was taken to a Weldon physician for treatment of hig wounds, principal of which was a slight gash cut over his left eye, and it was only a matter of a few minutes until the tourists were again on their route.
