MAY GET NEW AVENUE SOON State Board Orders Project On Calendar Also Chances For New Littleton Road But No Concrete As Hoped Real hope for a new highway thru Roanoke Rapids from the railroad to the bridge was held forth by the new State Highway Commission in session at Raleigh Monday. Chairman E. B. Jeffress instructed his secretary to put this project on the department calen dar. The delegation from Roanoke Rapids has just been refused a concrete road from Littleton to Roanoke Rapids. The Commission agreed this road needed attention badly but they held out that a seventeen mile concrete road at this time would use up more than the entire amount to be allotted the entire county. A “new” road of a cheaper type, similar to that from the Virginia line to Emporia, was suggested by Will Woodard, new member of the Board from Rocky Mount. It is possible this plan may be adopt ed. This would call for tearing up the present oil-treated road which has proved so unsatisfactory and building a rock-bace, macadam highway. i The cost -of this type road would be about $5,000 per mile as com pared to $30,000 per mile for a concrete highway. Another stumbling block in the way of a concrete road between here and Littleton was the fact Leland Kitchen, Scotland Neck, member of the Highway Commis sion last year, secured the approv al of the Commission for a con crete road from Scotland Neck to ward Rich Square, and this a mount is now charged against Halifax County for new work. Most of the members of the Commission who knew about the condition of the Avenue agreed this was due in no small part to the heavy traffic when this was part of the main State highway system and a Federal highway. A new Avenue seems most likely in the near future. Details as to width, etc., were not discussed as this was the first meeting of the new body and they had not in tended to see any delegations at all. The question of the Lawenceville road was brought up and endorsed by the Roanoke Rapids delegation. It is highly possible this road will be improved in the very near fut ure. The local delegation consisted of County Commissioner Frank Joyner, Mayor Kelly Jenkins, Town Commissioner Alfred Martin, Kiwanis President Charley Davis, and Carroll Wilson.
