Two Roanoke Rapids Men Are
Sentenced To Roads For
Non-Support
HEAVY DOCKET
Of the fifteen cases before the
Recorder Tuesday only three eas
es were liquor charges. The other
charges were as follows: two cas
es of assault, two cases of non
support, one ease of larceny, two
cases of assault with deadly wea
pon. and one case each of drunk
and disorderly conduct, and assault
with deadly weapon, trespassing,
speeding, disorderly conduct, and
abandonment and non-support.
Ossie Mills, charged with as
sault, plead not guilty. lie was
found guilty, however, and sen
tenced to six months in jail to be
assigned to work at jail or County
Home.
W. E. Tanner, who was tried
for non-support of children, plead
not guilty, but was found guilty
and sentenced to ninety days in
jail to be assigned to work the
roads.

rell, charge dwith assault, defend
ant Borrell was called and failed.
Judgment was Nisi Sci Fa Capias
and continued. Continued as to
Ezra Jordan also.
In the case of Jessie Richardson,
Ellis Richardson, and Joe Lee
Richardson, all plead guilty. Joe
Lee Richardson was sentenced to
five months in jail to be assigned
to work the roads, while Jessie
and Ellis Richardson were sen
tenced to five months in jail each
to be assigned to work the roads.
Sentence was suspended, however,
for two years on good behavior.
In the case of L. H. Cullom,
charged with abandonment and
non-support of children, defend
ant was called and failed. Judg
ment was nisi sci fa capias and
continued.
Tom Tudor, who was tried on
liquor charges, plead not guilty,
and was found not guilty.
Fred Hopkins, charged with
speeding, plead not guilty, but
was found guilty. Prayer for
judgment was continued on pay
ment of costs.
Eli Bowen, was tried for non
support, plead not guilty. He was
found guilty, however, and sentenc
ed to ninety days in jail to be as
signed to work the roads as to
first count. As to second count,
he was sentenced to ten months
in jail to be assigned to work the
roads. Sentence in second count is
to be suspended for two years1
provided that upon completion of
the ninety days’ sentence defend
ant properly provides for his fam
ily
Pearlie Edward Clark, who was
tried on liquor charges, plead
guilty, and was sentenced to sixty
days in jail to be assigned to
work the roads. Sentence was sus
pended on condition he pays costs
by Friday, July 28, 1933.
In the case of Beatrice Law
rence, who was charged with he
wing drunk and disorderly and as
sault with deadly weapon, which
case has been continued for some
time, it was ordered that defend
ant be sent to jail for three
months with authority of County
Commissioners to hire her out. The
above sentence was passed since
it appeared to the Court that a
former judgment had not been
complied with.
The case of Hopkins Wilcox, who
was up on liquor charges, was
continued until Nov. 1, 1933, for
balance of costs, part of which

O. M. Mull, Democratic State
chairman in 1928, when the
State went “hell-bent for Hoov
er”. has voiced his opposition to
appointment of Frank R. Mc
Ninch, Charlotte, as chairman
of the Federal Power Commis
sion, on which he has served
as a member for two years. The
appointment has been made by
President Roosevelt and after
President Hoover had named
McNinch as a Democrat is mem
ber. McNinch headed the Anti
Smith committee in 1928 and is
credited with much of the work
which caused the State to vote
against Smith and for Hoover.

The case of Hampton Tope,
who was charged with assault with
deadly weapon, was continued on
condition defendant pays $2.00
each week until all costs are paid.
It having appeared to the Court
that sentence heretofore entered in
the case of William Drumgould,
charged with disorderly conduct,
had not been complied with, it
was ordered that the defendant be
committed to jail to be assigned
to work roads for a period of eight
months.
The case of Brad Avent, who
was charged with trespassing, was
continued to July 28 for payment
of balance cf costs.
Former sentence not having been
complied with in the case of Wil
lie Lawrence Alston, who was tried
tor assault with deadly weapon,
it was ordered that defendant be
.->ent to the roads for ninety days
if costs are not paid by July 28.
