Next Week At Local Theatres
PEOPLES
PROGRAM
Headed by an amazing story
and an impressive east, “The
Wrecker” comes to the Peoples
screen next Monday-Tuesday. Jack
Holt is featured, with a support
ing cast composed of Genevieve
Tobin, George E. Stone, and Sid
ney Blackmer.
Holt is a ruthless chap who
earns his living by tearing down
buildings. Blackmer, cultured, re
fined, a graduate of Harvard, is
his time-keeper. Miss Tobin por
trays the part of a faithless wife,
while Geo. E. Stone is a junk deal
er, instead of a “big brain” o"
finance, as he was recently cast.
Holt conies to be a “big shot”
in the wrecking business along
the West Coast, while his forme1'
time-keeper, Sidney Blackmer als
comes up in the world as a bui'd
ing contractor. Both are success
ful, tho’ Blackmer’s bids to be the
sort that is short lived because of
inferior materials he puts in the
buildings. When Ho ltfinds an il
licit love affair has been in prog
ress betheen his wife and Black
mer, he agrees on a quiet, uncon
tested divorce to save the future
reputation of his son, whose cus
tody goes to the mother.
When it seems there is notning
more to live for, and Blackmer is
being praised as the contractor on
a big new school building, on which
he has really made a “killing”, an
earthquake comes, trapping Black
mer and his wife in the new build
ing. The authorities are not con
tent to risk the lives of 50 rescue
workers to save the couple, and
it appears that only Holt can save
them. He is confronted with the
problem as to whether he should
save his unfaithful wife and friend
or let them perish—leaving hi:
boy to him. Just how he works
ut this problem is the climax to
the story, and one you will en
joy
If you are an admirer of Claud
ette Colbert’s prowess as a fine,
dramatic actress, you will leave
the theatre more of a fan of hers
than ever after seeing “Torch
Singer,” in which she is featured
vith David Manners and Ricardo
Cortez, with Lyda Roberti and
Baby LeRoy in the supporting
cast.
Miss.Colbert really sings, reveal
studying privately for months for
studying provately for months for
just this sort of a role, preferring ,
to wait until she was ready as a |
singer, and her work in this film
's ;eally outstanding.
Next week’s Friday-Only bill at
Hie Peoples brings Warner Oland
and Heather Angel in another of
he ever-popular Charlie Chan
series, the title of this one being
‘Charlie Chan’s Greatest Case.”
Buck Jones is featured in
“Treason,” a western, for the Sat
urday show next week at the Peo
ples.
IMPERIAL ”1
PROGRAM
In “Rafter Romance,” coming
Monday-Tuesday to the Imperial,
Ginger Rogers and Norman Foster
make a unique discovery. Sounds
impossible, but two people can hate
almost intolerably, and love, al
most infinitely, the same person
at the same time and be wholly un
aware of it.
This is exactly the situation they
face in their latest film, and it al1
comes about by occupying the same
apartment—tho at different hours.
1 Norman Foster portrays a young
city chap who works at night, and
sleeps in the day-time in a “loft
apartment.” The same apartment
is occupied at nights by Ginger
Rogers, who works in the day
time and never sees the day-occu
pant of the rooms tho’ she hates
him with passion.
All Norman knows is that a
very precise girl occupies his do
main all night, and he lays awake
days, figuratively, plotting little
ways to annoy her, and he has a
genius for it. In the meantime
they meet, tho their identity is not
revealed, and fall in love with
each other. You can imagine the
climax when they find they have
been occupying the same room all
of the time and did not know it.
“Rafter Romance” may be said t>
b" very good entertainment, in
which the versatile young Foster
does a very good characterization.
Miss Rogers is always appealing
and particularly in some of the
“undressing” scenes in this movie.
Wednesday-Only, the Imperia
brings back “Hell Below,” star
ring Robert Montgomery. Thi:
was one of the first films to be
shown in Roanoke Rapids Theatres
after their combined management,
and was shown at both the Peopl
and Imperial for a Saturday at
I traction. Now they are bringing it
back to the Imperial for the bene
fit of those who did not see the
film before. It is one of the out
standing pictures of the past sea
son, and offers Jimmy Durante,
I
Walter Huston, Madge Evans and
Eugene Pallette in the supporting
cast. It is a thrilling picture of
submarine warfare.
Thursday-Friday, the Imperial
offers Marlene Deitrich in her lat
est starring vehicle, “Song of
Sbngs.” Critics have expressed
widely different opinions on this
film, but no less than three-weeks
ago it was getting over a dollar
on Broadway, and many are of
the opinion that “Song of Songs’*
is the best yet by this exotic screen
personality, Marlene Deitrich.
Saturday brings the proverbial
“western” this itme with Tim
McCoy in “Man of Action.”
