WITH THE EDITOR
(Continued from page one)
perieneed in the past. With
attachments pouring in, they
were deiaved several hours in
leaving Halifax County Sun
day. Finally bonds were fixed,
other legal tingles untied and
the boys and girls rolled away
to the next bunch of “suck
ers.”
It appeared to be a very inter
esting carnival. They tell us the
big side show with the freaks,
the Mermaid and the dancing girls
did the biggest business. The writ
er’s main reason for not knowing
first hand was that he had to take
care of the children.
There was one act which
should receive just praise. We
waited two hours to see it,
hut it was worth it. We mean
the lion act in front of the
grandstand. While the rest of
the “free acts" were very ordi
nary. this lion act was worth
the price. W hat a woman.
Five lions in the same cage
and all afraid of her. Thing
of her poor husband.
The Avenue will soon be sport
ing three new NEON signs, the
kind with bright flare. New signs
will adorn each of the theatres
and the third sign will be display
ed by Rosemary Drug Co. A per
pendicular sign will be hung at
each theatre and the marquee of
the Imperial will also be trimmed
with Neon tubes.
Nothing adds to the looks
of a town more than a well,
brightly lighted business sec
tion. People feel more like
buying from such a place.
Lights help get you in the
mood—that cheerful mood
when all’s well with the world.
We congratulate these busi
ness firms and hope others
can soon follow their exam
ple.
The new sign for the Peoples
Theatre will mark the passing of
another old landmark. The sign
now in use is the first electric
sign ever used in Roanoke Rapids
and is still the only moving sign.
A circle of colored lights at the
top, chase each other around,
while the lower part flashes off
and on.

STANDING ALONE
For just a moment, in the next
spring, there seemed to be a re
newed popular interest. The crowds
flocked around Jesus in the old
familar way; the disciples noted it
joyously. “The multitudes come to
gether to him again,” they ex
claimed and at once their hopes
Bruce Barton
were busy witn
new visions of
his success. But
dismay followed
fast Against
their ardent pro
test he carried
them off into
close retirement.
They were rest
less, lonely, dis
tressed at the
high handed
fashion in which
he turned away supporters.
Was it necessary to be so harsh
with the Pharisees? Why should
he have ridiculed them out of hi ■>
company? Why tell people that
their precious ritual was less ac
ceptable to God than the cry for
mercy of an untaught publican ?
Why slight their ready hospitality
in favor of an outcast like Zaecha
eus. Jesus’ little group of friends
were still groping for a clear vis
ion of message and purposes when
for the last time he led them
down to Jerusalem and the final
feast.
The one week of his life which
everybody knows is the last week.
Hence we pass over it in these
articles. It began with the trium
phant shouts of “hosanna”; it end
ed with the bloodthirsty cries jf
“crucify.”
Between the first morning of
triumph and the last hours of
mortal agony it witnessed his fin
est verbal victories over his op
ponents. Never were his nerves
more steady, his courage higher,
his mind more keen. Deliberately
he piled up the mountain of hat
red, knowing that it would kill
him, but determined that there
should be no doubt through the
ages as to what he had stood for,
and why he had to die.

only for a glimpse of a most won

It is the final supper on that
cool, quiet Thursday night. He
knew that he should never meet
with the disciples around the
table again. All the memories of
the three great years must have
crowded into his mind as the meal
progressed.
And this was the end. His rel
atives had turned their backs on
him; his home town had scorned
his advances, his best friend had
died doubting; the people had
turned away, and his enemies were
about to triumph—is there any
other leader who would have stood
forth unbroken by such blows?
