Plan New Organization Link
ed With The State
Association
A rejuvenated Roanoke Rapids
Merchants Association, outgrowth
of the old Rosemary Merchants
-Association, to include every re
tailer within the city limits, was
the outcome of an enthusiastic
meeting held here yesterday after
noon.
The new association will be a
part of the State Retail Merch
ants Association and expects to
take an active part in local affairs
as wall as those of State-wide in
terest affecting the retailers.
Chairman A. N. Martin appoint
ed a nominating committee of
George Taylor, H. S. Loy, Irvin
Starke and Robert Cleaton. This
committee reported on permanent
officers who were elected by ac
clamation.
Curtis C. Shell was elected
President; M. D. Collier, Vice
President; Howard Hancock, Sec
retary; Wm. Alfred Thorne, Treas
urer.
President Shell , in accepting
his office, said he would invite
Willard Dowell, executive secretary
of the North Carolina Retail Mer
chants Association to come here
and address the ne worganization.
At the request of Mayor Jenkins,
chairman of the local NRA Com
pliance Board, Mr. Shell appoint
ed F. M. Coburn, W. F. Joyner
and Knox Dickens to represent the
Merchants Association at meet
ings of the Compliance Board.
Informal talks from the floor
wf^-e made by C. C. Shell, H. S.
Loy, George Pappendick, George
Nash, L. G. Shell, Carroll Wilson,
W. F. Joyner and F. M. Coburn.
These str'essed the need of a
compact, live active merchants
association for the purpose of af
fi fating with the State organiza
tion in legislative matters, of solv
ing local problems confronting the
retailer, of saving the business
houses money in the matter of
fly by night advertising schemes,
of gaining better cooperation and
friendliness between the retailers
of the two business sections, and
of strengthening the credit situ- I
at ion in the city.
The association will have regu
lar monthly meetings, dues will
be charged which will permit the
group to accomplish things which
could not be done unless there was
money in the treasury, all legis
lation affecting retailers will be
carefully watched thru the State
organization.
Just as soon as Mr. Dowell ac
cepts the invitation, a special meet
ing will be called and all retailers
will be notified. A schedule of
dues will be worked out so that
every store, no matter how small,
may become a member and it ap
pears from the enthusiasm shown
by the official representatives of
more than 30 local firms yester
day that the retailers are going
to have a live, wide-awake or
ganization that will be of invalu
able aid to every member and to
the city as a whole.

Points At Employers

GOING MODERN
No matter how simple and con
servative your home!, if you are
thinking of refurnishing it with
modernistic pieces—either through
out, or merely in one room, you
can gain some very clever back
ground effects through the use of
a little clever carpentry and very
little materials. The inside of a
room can be modernized by rip
ping out the old moulding and re
placing it with a modern, angular
type. You can give your wall
moulding a clever effect by run
ning them in three strips down
the center of every five foot space
—each strip a little shorter than
the other. Baseboards can be made
attractive, too, and one of the best
looking we’ve seen came out from
the wall in a block-effect set-back
on which our hostess arranged in
teresting little groups of potted
plants and odd little books piled
high.
Admiral Byrd announced that he
will sail to the Anarctic this
month. Evidently he doesn’t like
this hot September weather.
