T Next Week At Local Theatres __uuuunJ IMPERIAL PROGRAM I When Ann Vickers becomes the warden of a reform institution for girls in the picture “Ann Vickers,” based on Sinclair Lewis’ novel, if certainly isn't the kind of a place to make a bad lady better. But, after Ann has done it over, it’s so bright and clean that one can almost imagine it must smell sweet. We follow Miss Vickers, a rest less soul, from her young days as a settlement worker on to her more mature years, when she has won renown as a penologist and author. She devotes herself assi diously to her career, seeking fame and fortune, but she finds time to dabble, so to speak, with love. She has two children without the for mality of a wedding ceremony. However, Ann retains her good name and position in society and does much worthy work among wayward girls. Altho’ it can /be seen that Ann leads rather a full life, she doesn’t really 1 Vnv happiness until she meets and loves Barney Dolphin, a crooked judge, who is sent to prison for accepting bribes. Apparently scenarists and direc tor have tried to crowd as much of the Lewis book on the screen as they could. The lovely and gen tle Irene Dunne gives an intelli gent portrayal of the heroine, while the versatile Walter Huston is happily cast as “Barney.” “Ann Vickers” is the feature attraction of the week at the Imperial, play ing there Monday and Tuesday of next week. Wednesday-Only brings a second Roanoke Rapids showing of “Gold Diggers of 1933,” this time at “bargain” prices. The story opens at Tony Pas tor’s Theatre with the original “Two Hac-ketts,” young dancers. They have a child. The act be comes “The Three Hacketts,” with the youngster a seasoned troup er. He grows up, marries, and be comes a star. His aging parents have small roles. He is killed in the war, his wife dies, the grand parents take the child, and their act becomes “The Three Hack etts” again. But motion pictures encroach. Vaudeville is dying. The talking picture completes the downfall of vaudeville, and the grandson goes into pictures and becomes a star. He also becomes a spendthrift and “good time Charlie,” and is in danger of be ing ousted from the screen when the old grandfather makes a “trouper” out of him again in a dramatic sequence. Gorgeous ballets, a spectacular finale, and many lavish stage spec tacles embellish the “cavalcade of the theatre.” Friday-Only, Donald Cook and Peggy Shannon are seen in “Fury of the Jungle,” while Randolph Scott and Esther Ralston appear in Zane Grey’s “To The Last Man” for the Saturday offering.
