WELFARE CONFERENCE MEETS IN HALIFAX The Central District Welfare Conference met in Halifax, Tues day, October list, at the School Auditorium, with J. B. Hall, Suo erintendent of Public Welfare of Halifax County, and president of the district, presiding over the morning and afternoon sessions. The meeting opened at 10 o’ clock with an invocation by Rev. J. T. Kirk, pastor of the Baptist church of Halifax, followed by an address of welcome by C. F. Gore, District Engineer State Highway Commission, Weldon, N. C. Mrs. W. B. Aycock of Raleigh, read the message of Mr. E. E. Connor, President of the North Carolina Association of Superin tendents of Public Welfare. I Mrs. W. T. Bost, State Com missioner of Public Welfare, to the meeting a message of im portance to social workers and all socially minded citizens interest ed in promoting State and local programs of welfare. She discuss ed the work of State and county welfare departments. Her talk was in the nature of a challenge to social workers to be listed among the builders in the New Deal. Dean Justin Miller, of Duke Uni versity, president of the North Carolina Conference for Social Service, was present and made a very interesting talk on “Juvenile Protection.” Dr. Roy M. Brown, Technical Supervisor, North Carolina Emer gency Relief Administration, dis cussed Relief Problems. Other speakers included George H. Lawrence, Superintendent of Public Welfare, Orange County; Samuel E. Leonard, Superintend ent of Eastern Carolina Training School, Rocky Mount; Miss Lily E. Mitchell, State Director of Child Welfare, and Mrs. W. B. Waddill. Superintendent of Public Welfare of Vance County. Mr. Stuart Smith of the County Board of Public Welfare, Scotland Neck, presided over the luncheon Luncheon was served by the Parent-Teachers Association of Halifax. Officers elected for the ensuing year were Mrs. J. K. Smith, Rocky Mount, President, and Mrs. Mitch in, of Louisburg, Secretary. There was an attendance of one hundred and two members and other interested parties, represent ing the following counties: Hali fax, Northampton, Nash, Wake, Warren, Vance, Durham, Hertford, Wilson, Wayne, Gates, Perquimans, Granville, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Franklin, Orange, Bertie, Chowan, Pasquotank, Edgecombe. AUREUAN SPRINGS AND NEIGHBORHOOD P. T. A. Meeting The monthly meeting of the Au relian Springs P. T. A. was held Wednesday night, November 1st with Mrs. Ray Bowers presiding. The meeting was opened with the song “America.” The devotional, which was conducted by Mr. Mor ris Clary, followed. The outstanding features of the program were some numbers pre sented by the Harmonica Band which has been organized recent ly in the fourth grade. The band gave three very enjoyable selec tions, “Star Spangled Banner,” “Taps” and “America the Beauti ful.” Mr. Matthews gave an in teresting talk on the “Child.” He showed how important it is that the parents and teachers cooper ate. A reading, “In Flander’s Field” was given by Miss Dorothea Mat thews. After the business was trans acted the secretary”s report was read and approved. The meeting adjourned to meet the first Wed nesday in December. Mrs. Mollie Riggan The Aurelian Springs commun ity suffered a grave loss last Sat urday in the death of one of her most useful and respected citi zens, Mrs. Molly Riggan. Mrs. Riggan was noted as an excellent housekeeper and cook. Those who dealt with her were as sured of her friendliness and genu ineness. She leaves a host of rela tives and friends who mourn her loss. The community has indeed suffered a loss from which there is no chance of recovery. Basketball Game Aurelian Springs will play her first basket ball game of the sea son with Woodland, Friday night, November 10th, in the new gym nasium which has recently been completed. Among her best play ers are Allan Carter, Wilson War ren, J. W. Lewis, Leon Knight, Randolph Crawley, Edward Ham ill, Lewis Saunders, Prudell Craw ley, Freeman Wood, Amon Liles, Howerton Hardy and others. Wil son Warren will captain the club this year. A large crowd is ex pected to attend. For Mrs. Jordan Miss Nita Turner nad Mrs. Jim Ingram were hostesses at a mis cellaneous shower honoring Mrs. Cebron Jordan, a recent bride, jf Garysburg, Friday night at the home of Mrs. W. A. Daniel. The living room was attractive in the arrangement of fall flowers. The hostesses served salted nuts, mints and ice cream sandwiches.
