FOR FOR MEM AND EVERY BOYS SEASON LEGGETTS Headquarters for Hanes Underwear REPORT RUM RUNNERS PLAN BIG BUSINESS IN THE CAROLINAS _ i _ Raleigh, Nov. 16—Is North Car olina due to be covered regularly and systematically by a thoroughly organized and fearless fleet of rum runners, plying from sources of supply to bootleggers located in every city, town and hamlet during the coming days of alleged dryness, following the “dry” vote in this State last week? Reports are given in Raleigh that last week an emissary of an organized gang from up around the Great Lakes was in the State looking over the land, checking highways, cities and towns, pos sible local contact men and other conditions, with the announced purpose of covering this State with a network to supply the supposed ly arid area with fiery liquid. He was in Durham, the report said, and that was thought to have been only one of several points touched in the preliminary sur vey. Eelief was expressed that 1 soon, probably even before the ISth amendment can be repealed early in December, a fleet of trucks will be plying from the Great Lakes area and also probably from Flor ida, Louisiana and other south ern ports, into North Carolina, and South Carolina as well. If such an organized crew should attempt such a thorough coverage, it would be impossible to prevent it en tirely, even with the entire Unit ed States Army and the State Militia and Highway Patrol, seeK ing to stop up the gaps through which it would flow. Another report is that the Sand hill resort folks are wondering what effect North Carolina’s and vote will have on the resort areas in and around Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Numbers of north ern people who had made reser vations at the hotels for this win ter have cancelled them. One man is quoted as having written to this effect: “Instinctively, I am a law-abiding citizen, but I like my toddy, and dislike the thought of breaking the law to get it, I shall | go where I can get it without vio lating liquor laws.” North Carolina, as well as South Carolina, will have plenty of troun le in the next few years in main lining even a semblance of arid ity, despite the two and a half to one vote last week against re peal of the 18th amendment. NOTICE In The Superior Court North Caro’ina. Halifax County.
