I I ^ AA v v m m * * * V T T ^ Shirt Thief Proves To Be “Super Salesman” CARL GREEN AND R. R. DETECTIVE FIND THE GOODS MISS WAFFORD HOSTESS Miss Edna Wafford was hostess on Tuesday Evening to the mem bers of her bridge club. Progres sive Contract was played at three tables. Attractive prizes were a warded to Mrs. Eugene Wilson for winning high score and to Mrs. Tom Cheek for low. A salad course was served. Those enjoying Miss Wafford’s delightful hospitality were: Mes dames Eugene Wilson, Lester Ed mondson, Alvis George, Sam Bunn, George Lampley, Wilmer Collier, Clyde Liske, Ivey Mohorn, Bill Alligood, Zollie Powell, Tom Cheek and Miss Helen Turner. Grief-striken because of the death of her pet cat, Mrs. Mabel E. Force of Denver, committed suicide. Alfonzo Mitchell, 30-year-: old local colored man is in the Halifax County jail in lieu of bond set at $200 on a charge of grand larceny, and at least one of last week’s four rob beries has been cleared up, thanks to the efforts of local officer Carl Green, and W. E. “Buck” Wilson, Seaboard de tective of Henderson. Wednesday night, Novem ber 15th, a box car on a sid ing near the freight depot at Roanoke Junction was broken into, and a case of dress shirts consign ed to F. M. Coburn, was stolen. Being one of four robberies in the city limits within as many days, the attention of the city po lice department was focussed on the case in an effort to bring the culprits to justice. Railroad detec tive Wilson was called in from Henderson by officials of the rail road. Wilson, working in collaboration with officer Green, found a trail of the shirts that had been barter ed and sold, “high, wide and hand some” all over the county, leading to the final arrest of the luckless Negro thief in a tobacco barn where he lived near Lincoln Heights, colored section of the city, last Saturday night. Mitchell, who has a police re cord, having served a stretch on the roads from Rocky Mount on a burglary charge, evidently worked single-handed in the box-car raid. Officers recovered 35 of the 72 shirts stolen, at least 25 of which are in good condition. The whole sale value of the entire case of shirts was thought not to exceed $75. Mitchell proved to be a most versatile and convincing salesman. Taking a bundle of shirts under each aim, he started out on his “territory,” calling on farm hous es in the county, with the story that he was a “travelling sales man” working out of Baltimore. Amusing aspects of the case pre sented themselves as it was learn ed by investigating officers that he had told his customers that the next time he visited them he would have a complete line of dresses and clothing for all of the family. These shirts were in the form of an “introductory offer,” and he sold them in quantities of one or more, for from 25c to 50c apiece. In some instances, the price was much more, but were sold “on credit.” But the ill-fated “salesman” will probably not return to collect from his “time customers” for quite a while, for in all probability he will be the guest of the County long after the last shirt he stole and sold is worn out. Miitchell waived preliminary hearing before Mayor Kelly Jenkins Monday, and is be ing held in the county jail in de fault of $200 bond.
