KILLED WHILE HUNTING
Opening their 1933-34 basketball
season the Roanoke Rapids High
School cage team took an impres
sive victory from the Alumni
(former high stars) Tuesday night
on the local high court. The score
was 23-13.
A large crowd witnessed the
cage affair; which proved to be
a close battle. Both clubs play
ed clean basketball and showed un
expected skill for their first en
counter. The Jax undoubtedly out
played the Alumni, both on offen
sive and defensive, uncorking a
fine passing attack. Although the
Alumni took an early lead and
led by a score of 9-8 at the half,
they were completely swamped the
second half, the Jax settling down
bagging 13 points to opponents 4.
The Jax squad played very ef
fectively as a unit and showed
great style of team work. Ervin
Dickens local high flash was the
high scorer of the game with 10
points, trailed by Joe McCom
mons, and George “Bama” Miller,
with 5 points each. Capt. Edwards
and Bennett played good defensive
ball at guard.
The Alumni, led by F. Sullivan
and Allsbrook, got away to a fast
start, and lookde as if they were
out for victory. Their passing
game failed to click, which prov
ed their downfall. Their points
were made from beautifully shot
field goals, which gave the game
much excitement.
The turkey being given away as
an added attraction, was won by
Miss Dorothy Pope, local high
student.

lighting effects and all the show

gestions.
Roanoke Rapids always has a
certain number of well decorated
homes and yards during the Yule
tide season, and it is hoped there
will be many additions this year.

| Kev. J. N. Bynum, president |
of Associated Charities, tells of
a woman who was always com
plaining and wanting help. She
was not destitute hut was evi
dently just in the habit of be
ing helped and even comp’ained
about the help she received. One
day, he was calling on a destitute
family, which really needed aid,
when this woman came to him.
He took her with him on his
visit. When she saw the condi
tion of the other family, she de
cided that she was well off and
never asked for aid again.
Yes, there are cases so bad that
even the poor0 shudder and give up
their share to them. Christmas is
a season of giving. He who does
not feel that spirit and gives, no
matter how little, is not celebrot
ing Christmas. That one is merely
passing another useless day on
earth.

May Color Street
Lights This Year
The ^ower Co. will be asked to
again color all the White Way
this year during the Christmas
season.
Last year, on its own initiative,
that company colored all the lights
along Roanoke Avonue in alter
nating colors of red and green and
it added much to the gayety of the
main drag.
With the White Way colored,
the Community Tree lighted, deco
rated front yards along the Ave
nue, Electric Building especially
lighted and the store windows
filled with Christmas decorations,
the business section will take on
real Christmas atmosphere by the
last of this week.
