Charged In Child’s Death
ROCKY MT.
HOLDS 3
FROM HERE
Mark Trevathan Held Under
Thousand Dollar Bond
In Hit-Run Case
Four men, three of them
from here, have been ar
rested and charged with the
death of a two' year old
child, killed fcty a car near
Rocky Mount Saturday.
Those arrested are Mark
Trevathan, 25, alleged driv
er of the car, George Jenk
ins, 35, Rufus Brantley, 25,
all of Roanoke Rapids, and
Joe Edwards of Rocky
Mount.
Trevathan and Jenkins live
in the Hammill Building near
Ledgenrood Hall and are textile
workers, while Brantley lives in
Belmont.
The dead child was Timken La
nier, 2-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. H. E. Lanier who live in
Edgecombe County, about six miles
from Rocky Mount.
Edwards, the Rocky Mount man,
was found in a drunken condition
by Deputy Sheriff Ed Moore, and
State Patrolman D. L. Lewis and
was locked up in the Rocky Mount
jail. There he told the whole, story
of the death of the child and the
officers came to this city where
with Police Carl Green, they ar
rested Trevathan and Jenkins.
Both men denied any knowledge of
the charge when arrested.
But Brantley, who was arrest
ed last, told the police about the
child, his story coinciding with
that of the Rocky Mount man.
According to the officers, Brant
ley and Jenkins were aware the
child was struck but say Treva
than insisted they hit nothing and
continued on.
Mrs. Lanier, the mother, says a
number of children were crossing
the road but all of the others were
able to avoid the rapidly driven
car except her little son. She said
she turned to save the child but
that he was struck down by the
car before she could reach him.
The child was instantly killed.
After hitting the boy, the car
jumped a three foot ditch and
stopped in a cotton patch. The
driver backed the car out, over
the ditch and continued on his way.
Officers found tracks of the car
in the cotton patch.
Trevathan is being held in jail
at Rocky Mount under a thousand
dollar bond for action of Edge,
comb Superior Court. The other
three men were placed under $250
bonds.
It was understood today that
Brantley had filled bond but the
others were still in jail.
When Thomas Francis of Nor
bury, Eng., was arrested for beg
ging he had five razors and four
bottles of beer.

KILLING
Officers Arrest Three To Get
One; Conflicting Tales
Told By Negroes
Several tangles relating to the
death of T. W. Wafford had to be
unraveled Monday and Tuesday by
local officers in seeking to pin the
guilt on the proper parties.
The driver of the car has sev
eral namas: He is known mostly
as Percy Whittaker, but also goes
by the name of Willie Whittaker
and claims his real name is Percy
Willis.
In trying to find his compan
ion, officers found out his name
was Lee. When they went to the
Lee house, there were three bro
thers, all of them who claimed in
nocence. Two of the brothers, Bus
ter and Lester, are twins. They
had to lock up all three of the
boys before Lester finally ad
mitted he was with the driver of
the death car.
The driver now says that he
wanted to stop but Lee made him
drive on. Lee, says he tried to get
the driver to stop and let him out
after hitting the man. There is no
doubt now but that both knew they
had hit a man and that, a little lat
er in the’ night, they knew the car
had killed Mr. Wafford.
Officers also know that other
Negroes knew about the whole af
fair Sunday night but refused to
aid officers by giving information.
