Special Easter services will be held at all Roanoke Rapids churches on Easter Sunday. The Dramatic Club of Gaston High School will present “Her Gloves”, a farce in three acts, on Friday night, April 5th at eight o’clock at the Gaston School. In the cast are Marjorie Williams, Morgorite Camp, Louise Hubbard, James Moody, Leslie Collier, Wil liam H. Camp, Ronald Coker, Grace Moody, Verlie Woodruff, Frank Hubbard. John McGee, 50 year old saw mill operator was held without bond in connection with the kill « ing of Lynn Tippett, 25, at Ringwood on the night of Morch 18th. McGee is in Jail at Hali fax. * It was our sincere pleasure to attend the public concert last Sunday at the High School when the Roanoke Rapids Choral Club made its first public appearance in a joint program with the Rose mary Concert Band. Those who did not attend missed the enjoy ment of a perfect Sunday after (Continued on back page) FORMER SHERIFF BURIED Huge Crowd Attend Last Rites For John R. Patterson At Littleton i _ A huge crowd of Halifax and Warren County citizens attended the funeral Monday afternoon of John R. Patterson, prominent county man and former sheriff of Halifax County. Mr. Patterson died Sunday night after a lingering illness of sever al months. He. was operated on recently at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Long prominent in local business and politics, Mr. Patter son served as sheriff of Halifax County from 1910 to 1914. He was an uncle of Wm. Alfred Thorne of this city. Active pallbearers were his nephews: Edward Patterson, Rob ert Patterson, Wm. Alfred Thorne, Robert Thorne, Whit Patterson and Clifton Austin. Honorary pallbearers were Congressman John H. There is a rumor to the effect that Dutch Seifert of this city will be a candidate for the House of Representatives irf'the 1935 General Assembly. Yesterday the NEWS called Sir. Seifert to confirm the report but he re fused to confirm it, however he also refused to deny it. Weldon would be proud to have one of its adopted sons in the next house. At present no one has offi cially announced their candi dacy for1 the job but rumors have it that R. Hunter Pope and Frank Taylor, members of the last General Assembly, will be candidates again.—(The Roa noke News, Weldon, N. C.) Robert Whitehead, infant son of William Whitehead, died yester day at the home of its parents near Camps Store. Funeral ser vices were held today with inter ment in the Roanoke Rapids Cem etery. 35 County Quota For C. C. Camp Halifax County has a quota of thirty white and five color ed for enrollment in C. C. Camp Applicants must be single, be tween the ages of 18 and 25 and of dependent families. Those interested should report at once to the Welfare Dept, in Halifax. Enrollment will be for* 6 months. FILLING STATION OWNER Well Known Business Man Is Victim Of Heart Trouble In Sudden Death Dewey Ausborne Armstrong, 36 years old, prominent local business man, fell dead at his home late Monday afternoon in the presence of his wife and sister. Mr. Armstrong suffered what he thought was an attack of in digestion while at work at the Auto Service Filling Station, owned by him and his brother in law, Wil liam J. Bartlett. He had been feel ing badly most of Monday after noon and about 4:30 went to his home on Hamilton Street, just back of the station. Ten minutes later he was pro nounced dead. Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Bartlett were present at the time. Acute indigestion, caus ing acute dilation of the heart, is supposed to have been the cause of death. Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. yesterday morning at the Christian Church with Rev. V. H. Grantham officiating. Pallbear ers were, Messrs Ivey Askew, Clyde Camp, Stewart Ferguson, J. A. James, R. A. Shaheen, Red Gore and George Seay. Surviving are his wife and one child, Julian Lee, three years old, one. sister, Mrs. Bartlett, and three (Continued on back page) PROJECT SUFFERS RELAPSE Temporary Shut-down On Sidewalk Proiect Due To CWA Ending START SOON All work on Roanoke Rapids CWA ten-mile sidewalk project came to an abrupt but total shut-down at four o’clock this afternoon. Although it is cer tain the work will be finishpd, it wall take at least a few days to work out new plans. The move came as a result of the federal government’s determination to clear up all CWA work. CWA officials at Halifax could give out no definite information at this time, although it was re ported expressed they have no doubt the government will go a head with the work under some new agency. Approximately 218 men have been at work on the project this week, with a total progress to (Continued on back page)
