_ Carolina’s Only TABloid NEWSpaper The Roanoke Rapids Herald VOLUME NINETEEN ROANOKE RAPIDS, N. C., THURSDAY, A^RIL 12th, 1934 NUMBER FIFTY-TWO nriJIYCC (ANNOUNCE 1 ni\LL FOR OFFICE _1--- -i-—- I ■■ I Dogs Attack School Boy ____-l k ——— UP AND DOWN T3he Avenue WITH THE EDITOR Those who said “we’rfe going to have some singing now” when the Kiwanis Club met to night certainly knew what they were talking about. Four young Roanoke Rapids men put on the finest musical program yet heard by the club. The Wil liams Quartet, consisting of Elmer, Coby and Rexnll Wil liams and Joe Fowler, was the featured program and delight ed the club for fifteen minutes with music fit for any city or1 broadcasting station. Piano solos by Joe, solo by Coby, trio and quartet singing, served up a real musical treat. If you have a big place on any program, better get in touch with these boys. One of things scoffers fail to realize is that a club like this encourages the efforts of the young boys of the city. Those four young fellows know their singing was really and publicly appreciat ed and it serves to- spur them on to do better things. Another fea ture of this local club, one which is now being adopted all over the country, a Roanoke Rapids first so far as we know, is the. plan to have a boy member of the Senior Class at High School as a full fledged member. A different boy every month. Ed Lewter was the ne,w member tonight and the old members enjoyed him as much as he seemed to enjoy his meal and being with the club. Improvement of Roanoke Ave nue will be delayed another month because there was only one bid at the April 10th let tings by the State Highway Deparment. This bid, by a Winston-Salem concern, was for $46,995.00 for the 1.4 miles on Roanoke Avenue which would have been improved and widened. John D. Waldrop, chief engineer, notified Mayor Kelly Jenkins to night that due to only one hid being received the contract could not be let. He said he hoped there would be competitive bids at the next letting as the department was as anxious as we that the work on the Avenue be started. From this it is assumed the price was not the reason for re fusing the bid, altho it was $7,000 more than the estimated cost. It is the policy never to allow a con tract unless there is competitive bidding.
