an o, and many times e drops

An explanation of why we now
have news from all parts of Hali
fax County. The Herald, after the
circulation drive, has the largest
county circulation in history. They
are interested in what goes on in
Roanoke Rapids; we are interest
ed in what goes on in the other
communities of the county and
across the river. The Herald should
serve now to tie us closer to -
gether and to get better acquaint
ed. No man can live unto himself
alone, or words to that effect.
The government is certainly
helping unemployment in check
ing on all the various phases of
AAA, PWA and FERA. Coun
ty Welfare Officer Hall and
County Farm Agent Davis have
so many working for them now
that 'every office lin the court
house is full and overflowing
and the court room is being
used for office space. Night
work is no novelty to these
crews as passing autoists can
vouch for.
We hear all the bad things and
all the worst features of the emer
gency departments of the county.
Everyone seems to still their woes
to an editor. We got in hot water
with some good friends once be
fore by criticizing one of the re
lief agencies. From all the things
we have heard in the past few
months, only one is worthy of note,
beause it has been repeated so of
ten, The cry is: Why a “million
aire” working for the relief agen
cies when so many others qualified
need the job?
Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Butts of
Halifax RFD 2 announce the
birth of a daughter on Wednes
day, August 22, at the Roanoke
Rapids Hospital.
We are sorry that for1 the past
two weeks we have been unable
to use some of the county news
sent in. It has piled up on us to
such an extent on Wednesdays
and Thursday that • we must
make new arrangements to take
care of it. Please be patient,
correspondents.

Officers have been quietly in

but reported nothing today.
One of several theories is the
clothing might belong to the
Negro- who was shot at by night
policeman Fitts two weeks ago as
he attempted to enter the rear of
Roanoke Hardware Co. The officer
hit the Negro once, perhaps twice,
from bloodstains found after the
chase in which the Negro es -
caped.

THIRD YR,
HERE FOR
LEGGETTS
Celebrate With Anniversary
Sale Friday and Saturday
Of This Week.
Leggett’s Department Store
celebrates their third anniversary
in Roanoke Rapids this week
with a Sale in honor of the event
Friday and Saturday. The store,
which is a member of the huge
Belk organization, operating over
100 department stores in the
South, was established in the large
100-foot building on Roanoke Ave
nue at Eleventh St. the latter part
of August, 1931, by H. S. Loy,
and has been under his continuous,
and highly successful management
since.
Many changes have occurred
since Leggett’s entered business
here three-years ago, and many
improvements have been made in
their store and the building they
occupy. A recent $3,500 remodel
ing program has just been finish
ed, making Leggett’s one of the
finest, most-modern department
stores in this section. The store
occupies 10,000 feet of floor space
and carries a stock of merchan -
dise in excess of $75,000 at va -
rious seasons of the year.
Leggett’s have enjoyed a con -
stantly increasing volume of busi
ness at their Roanoke Rapids
store and their name is known for
many miles around the surround
ing trade territory. The company
recently opened a new store at
Lawrenceville, Virginia, which is
operated as a branch of the local
store.

iaING TUT WAS A
l FLAGPOLE SITTER
Old King Tut was a famous man
in his day and he never dreamed
he would be so well known thous
ands of years later. Don’t wait too
long to learn why they all say :
“How fast can you STOP?”
The above question doesn’t
mean as much to some drivers as
“How fast can you go?” — but
the time comes when it is more
important !
The absolutely dependable paid:
of every car should be the
BRAKES.
Your car should be able to
make not merely a quick stop, but
a straight stop — without slew
ing off to one side or another.
That’s dangerous.
Get your brakes in perfect shape.
Let us inspect them. If you have
good lining there to spare, and
all that’s needed is adjustment—
IT WILL BE A PLEASURE TO
SERVE YOU AT TRIFLING
COST.
