REGISTER AT PROPER PLACE HERE NEXT WEEK Roanoke Rapids city schools will open at 8:20 a. m., September 10th, with indications pointing to the largest enrollment in history. With an enrollment last year of almost 2,800, local school authorities look forward to handling lamost 3,000 children this year. The increases due not only to first year pupils but also to the fact that many pupils who dtropped out in previous years are planning to return to school this year. High School students are asked to report for registra tion on the following dates : 7th. Grade, Tuesday, Sept. 4th., 9 to 12 noon. 8th. Grade, Tuesday, Sept. 4th., 2 to 5 p. m. 9th. Grade Wednesday, Sept. 5th., 9 a. m. to noon. 10th. Grade, Wednesday, Sept. 5th., 2 to 5 p. m. 11th and 12th. Grades, Thursday, Sept., 6th., 9 a. m. to noon. JNew Text Books The State Text Book Commission has changed the text books in commercial history and civics and Supt. Davis has asked that students do not buy used books in these courses. Graded Schools Miss Clara Hearne announces that is is very important that all First Grade children register on Friday, September 7th. This includes beginners and repeaters. Those who expect to attend Central School will regis ter at that building at 9:30 a. m., Friday, September 7th. Those who will attend Rosemary School or the Band Hall school will register at Rosemary School at 1:30 p. m. Friday, September 7th. Time for registration will close at 3:00 p. m. In order to get all preliminaries out of the way the week before school starts and be ready to begin active work on the mroning of September 10th, pupils and their parents are urged to keep the above dates and time in mind and be present for proper registration. The Colored Schools of Roanoke Rapids will also open t>n September 10th and children and their parents are re quested by the principal to be there on that morning for registration. Rayon, silk and woolen workers were not called but told to stand by for furth - er orders. Union leaders were also told to follow instruc - tions which they had pre - viously received. Radio reports heard here tonight say that two mills in Alabama went out on strike as soon as the message was received, not waiting for Sat urday night. Picketing start ed at once, according to radio. Newspaper reports today say that the Dan River milk at Danville, Va., second larg est in the U. S„ will not go out on strike. Nor will the Pilot Cotton Mills and the Neuse Mfg. Co. at Raleigh, neither of which has been unionized. In the North, where La - bor Day Monday is a holiday, the extent of the strike will not be known until Tuesday. LAKE THOMAS The Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association will be hosts at a Barbecue Dinner at Lake Thomas next Wednesday afternoon, Sept ember 5th., at 6:00 o’clock. The manager, or owner of each ’irm belonging to the city retail or’s association has been present od one ticket, with the compli - ments of the club, and has addi tional tickets at his disposal, which He may sell to other members of the firm, or his family at a very nominal sum. The supper will be in the form of a social “get-together,” and has been planned for quite some time. It is expected a large number of merchants will be present, as well as visiting delegations from near by cities, who have been issued a special invitation.
