UP AND DOWN
Oie Avenue
WITH THE EDITOR
Up and Down the Avenue is
a real pleasure now, particular
ly at night. The Holiday spir
it comes mal e and more in evi
dence. Moot recent addition is
the lighting of the business
blocks between 9th and 11th
with strands of Christmas- col
ored tights crossing back and
forth on the Avenue. The view
is plenty pleasing when com
ing up the Avenue from the sta
tion or from the hospital.
Tonight will probably see the
business section from First to
Third also aglow with Christ
mas lights, stretched straight
across the Avenue. Smith, the
Electric'an, has been busy the
past few days getting these
lights in order. However, this
section has not lacked Christ
mas spirit, the VEPCO building
having burst forth in gorgeous
glare this week.
With this double arrangement,
the possible addition of the Com
munity Tree in front of the hos
pital, and the usual clever Christ
mas lights at private^ residences
along the Avenue, we can safely
predict that our old Avenue is
going to be one of the show plac
es of the State th(is season, from
First to Fifteenth.
Then add to that the show win
dows of the stores which already
are being bedecked with all the
allure that only' Christmas decor
ations, colors and gifts can at -
tain, and our slogan from now un
til the 25th, is, “See the Avenue
and see Paradise.”

DOGS YET ‘
RUN THE
STREETS
Many Owners Are Not
Keeping Dogs In As
Ordered By Mayor
- _
Dogs continue to run the streets
of Roanoke Rapids despite the or
der by Mayor Jenkina issued last
week that all owners pen their
dogs up for thirty days.
Officers report killing a half
dozen mote dogs since those kill
ed the first of last week. A half
dozen persons bitten are taking
the dreaded treatment.
Officer Green made the rounds
of the town today and notified
several dog owners to pen up their
dogs. He says he found several
owners who thought if their dogs
had been inoculated for rabies
the pen-up order did not refer to
them.
He pointed out that the dog of
Zollie Powell, killed last week,
had been reported mad altho the
dog had been inoculated. In short,
the treatment is not 100 per cent
sure cure and when the Mayor
said al\ dogs he meant every dog
