DON’T CALL THEM
RED CROSS SEALS
The phrase “Red Cross Seals”
is a misnomer, according to a
joint statement issu d by the Nat
ional Tuberculosis Association
and the Amer can Red Cross, a
copy of which has just been re
ceived by the Welfare Department
of the Roanoke Rapids Womans
Club.
The proper term is “Christmas
seals” or “Health Christmas Seals”
The seal is no longer sold by the
Red Cross and has not had any
connection with the Red Cross
since 1919. It is manufactured by
the National Tuberculosis Asso -
ciation, distributed by the state
tuberculosis associations and sold
by county and city Christmas seal
committees and health organiza -
tions.
The seal since 1919 has borne
the design of the double-barred
cross (the Lorraine cross) which
is thi officia' emblem of the in
ternal onal crusade against tuber
culosis.
The proceeds are used locally
for several forms of health work.
75 per cent remains at home.
The Red Cross raises its mon
ey through the annual roll call
and through special contributions
in time of disaster By agree -
ment betwe n its national head -
quarters and the National Tuber
culosis Association the Roll Call
is lim'ted to the time between
Armistice Day and Thanksgiving,
and the pub'ic sal1 of seals begins
the day after Thanksgiving. While
publicity and organization work on
the two campa'gns necessarily
overlap, str'et instruction are is
sued by both national headquart
ors that ro 1 call solicitation must
cease on Thanksgiving Day, while
on the other hand th ■ genera!
public sale of seals through the
mail, by neighborhood canvas or
through public booths shall not
bc(gin earlier than the following
day.
