LOCAL MAN KILLED, SEVERAL ARE INJURED Hubert Leggett of Roanoke Rap ids was instantly killed Saturday night about 10:00 o’clock when the Ford touring car which he was driving collided hepd on with a Ford coach driven by Marvin Har ris, of Garysburg. The accident occurred on the Richmond high way between Roanoke Rapids and Pleasant Hill. In the car with Leggett were his sister, Miss Legge.tt of Roa noke Rapids, Miss Mary Hudson, Preston Mason and Jessie Allen all of W ldon, who escaped with minor cuts and bruises. Occu - pants of the Harris car were Boseman Harris, brother of the driver, Misses Marjorie Robinson, Elizabeth Robinson, Mildred Mit - chell and Lorene Mitchell of Skip pers, Va. and Roy Edwards of We’don, none of whom were se riously injured. The wreck was viewed by Pa tro'man J. R. Stephepson of Wel don, but due to the death: of one of the drivers and the bad con dition of tlje cars was unable to asc rtain the exact cause of the accident, which occurred on a straight road. The Northampton County coroner could not be lo cated, and it was not until 4:00 o’clock Sunday morning that the body could be moved and the wreck cleared. Jackets Will Meet Alumni Next Tues. The Roanoke Rapids High Schjool basketball team will meet tha High School Alumni at the local gym on Tuesday night in the sec ond game of the season. The first game is be,ing played tonight with Aurelian Springs. Coppedge and Sue Millikin. Miss Tempie Carter spent the week end with hjer mother at Lit tleton. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Draper of Weldon were the week end guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira G. Shaw. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Hux and son, Hillary, A. B. Hux and Worth Petty of Portsmouth, Va., spent Sunday with Mrs. Robert Dick - ens. Mrs. Tom Jenkins of Roanoke Rapids was a visitor here, Monday. Mrs. Caswell Shaw, Mrs. Wil lie Dickens and Jarvis Bryant spent Monday in Durham. Miss Anne Williams of Fayet tesvi'le is th|e guest of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hux. Mrs. C. F. Musselman and Mrs. Ann e C. Hale spent Saturday in Richmond. Miss ‘ Dot” Campbell of Roa - noke Rapids was the week guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Campbell. Mrs. Frances Lewis of Scotland Neck was the guest of her mo ther on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Stedman, Mrs. P. W. M. White and Mrs. R. L. Applewhite, spent Monday in Richmond. Mrs. Lillie N. Fenner of Wood v'lle was the guest of Mrs. H. B. Furgerson last week. Mrs. Mary Read, G. B. Read, Myrtle and Lucille Read spent Thanksgiving with Mrs. Chas. P. incent in Lal'sbury. Mr. H. Anderson and Mr. Wes ley Pittman were visitors here on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kaneer of j Char otte were guests of Mrs. P. C. Dave Millikin Home Destroyed By Fire Halifax, Dec. 13th.—The spa cicus Country home of Dave Mil likin, south of Halifax was com pletely d stroyed by fire, leaving only thjc four chimneys standing, Tuesday about noon. The family, unaware of the fire, was informed by a negro farmer that the top of the house was a blaze. The farm bell was rung, but being the noon hour, no one thought it was a call for help. Mr. Mi likin was in town when the f re was discovered and by the time he reached the farm the house was swallowed in flames. Only clothing and a few pieces of fuvn ture was saved.
