MANY FARMERS LACK PROPER PLANNING By E. K. VEACH, Aurelian Springs Agricultural Teacher Farmers who have not made com plete plans for farming the com ing year should do so as rapidly as possible. The time is here when nothing is needed so badly on the average farm as more intelligent planning. Some farm folk do not work enough to deserve success; some work sufficiently hard but for lack of any plan do not suc ceed as they should; and some who make good work harder than would be necessary if all efforts were more thoughtful y directed. As some one has said, “Farm planning and bookkeeping are the eyes of farming. Before I started to keep cost accounts I worked in the dark.” The time is here when farmers must not lose the advantage gain ed by, neglect of clear thinking. The problem is still your own. Governmental efforts in your be - half have been directed towards getting agriculture in line for ad justment. The farmers task at pre sent is to hold, plan a little more careful what you are going to do, and go forward. Economic production must be ba sic with a farmer in his opera tions. Quality production at mini mum cost bears the same relation to agriculture as it does to any successful business. In organizing your farm to find out what to plant or raise you should consider the demand for the product thro ugh accurate reports (now avail able to all farmers), and produc tion must be regulated to meet this demand. Farm planning does not only in clude the caslT crops you will plant and the livestock you will keep, but provides for food and feed crops to plant, also general repairs on the farm and the main tenance of soil fertility. The maintenance of soil fertility is one of the first things a farm er shou’d keep in mind if he ex pects to be a successful farmer. No farm plan is worthy of the name that does not provide for keeping up the fertility of the land. Legumes must be grown, co ver crops used, land not suitable for cultivation may be sown down in grass, stable manure saved for the land and fertilizer used not on ly to boost a cash crop yield but also to make better clover, vetch and small grain or grass to hold the soil and add to its fertility. Terraces play an important part many times in the upkeep of our soil. Don’t forget the farmer who plans and organzes his farming business is the farmer who will succeed in the future over a per iod of time.
