ASK THAT BOARDS BE ABOLISHED Resolutions regarding the State school institution were passed at thelast meeting of the Kiwanis Club, asking the Legislature, for more appropriations for public schools, the abolition of one of the State Boards and for the appoint ment of th estate Supt. of Public Instruction as executive secretary of the State Board of Eduation or combined commission. The abolition of the extra State School Board now functioning wuold mean the elimination of George C. Green, of Weldon, a member of the new board ap pointed by Governor Ehringhaus. It would also mean that LeRoy Martin, present secretary of the Commissionn, wuold lose that job. During sessions of the legislature, Mr. Martin doubles as Clerk of the Senate. The resolutions are as follows: ‘ The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke Rapids, N. C., representing the business and professional men of our town, hereby petition our Representatives in the State Legis lature ; 1. “To follow the State Super intendnet of Public Instruction in the matter of appropriations for schools for the next biennium. 2. “To unify and coordinate the State’s activities for schools by appointnig the State Board of Edu cation, which is a constitutional body, to serve as the State School Commission, and to render such needed services as should be ren dered by a State School Commis sion. 3. “To appoint the State Super intendent of Public Instruction to serve as an executive Secretary to the State School Commission, thus assuring complete cooperation be tween the State school forces.” Card of Thanks We wish to thank our many friends, dcotor and nurse, for their kindness shown to us during the illness of our husband and father. Douglas MacArthur whose soldiers drove the veterans from their Washington camp tw years ago. 159 Year Old Towel Found In Pugh Estate In the estate of the, late Mrs. Kate Pugh, who died a few days ago at her home in Halifax County, and who was 97 years old, were found many articles of historical interest. Among them was a towel which was given Mrs. Pugh’s grandmother 159 years ago as a souvenir of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The towel is made of white linen with a three-inch border of red, and is fringed at both ends. In each of the four corners is an American shield, woven in the, cen ter and surrounded by small stars is the following inscription: “The Independence of the United States of America declared July 4, 1776." Dividnig this from the next part is an American eagle, below which reads: “Washington elected Presi dent of the Federal Union, March, 1789. E. Pfaribug Unum.” The towel is in an almost per fect state of preservation. It is not known just how long the towel has been inn Mrs. Pugh’s posses sion. It eventually will go to the great-great-great-grandson of the original owner, Mastre James Ed ward Condrey, III. Mr. T. B. Coaker, of Portsmouth, Va., attended the funeral of Mrs. J. C.
