UP AND DOWN Ghe Avenue WITH THE EDITOR Bad weather again delays work on the Avenue. The two blocks in the North ward business sec tion are thru the worst of it. The storm sewers have been laid there and work is now oh First and Third Streets. Curbing is about half finished and can be completed with three days of decent weather. An other month should see the project about complete in both ends. Dig ging will start on one side of the Avenue in the South Ward sop16 ^ next week, but the job will not take so long there. STATE TAX MAN COMING S. A. Dunn, Jr., Deputy Revenue Commissioner, will be in Roanoke Rapids March 7th. and 14th. to as sist in the preparation of State Income Tax returns which must be filed before mid-night March 15. A return is required of every single person who receives an annual income in excess of $1000 and every married person with an annual income in excess of $2000. Also anyone who receives divi dends from foreign corporations (those not chartered in N. C.) must pay on the proportion not paid by the corporation at the source, regardless of the amount of income received therefrom. Mr. Dunn will be located in the lobby of the Roanoke Rapids post office ©n March 7th and March 14th. MRS. LEE SHEFFIELD IN DANGER Develops Double Pneu monia; Sister And Hus band Also Injured __ :y~: - Doctors give Mrs. Lee Shef field only an even chance to live as double pneumonia de veloped yesterday from injur ies she received in a car wreck between Richmond and Fre dericksburg late Friday night. Injured, also and in the same hospital are her sister Mrs. Coston Rice and her husband, Lee Sheffield. Mrs. Robert King, her sister in law, was able to return home after first aid treatment for cuts and bruises. Mr. Rice was the only occupant of the car un injured. I Mrs. Sheffield suffered a broken I pelvis in two places and a fract ured verterbra, paralyzing her from the hips down. Mrs. Rice and Mr. Sheffield each have three broken ribs. They are all in a Fredericksburg hospital. The wreck took place On a hill in a rainstorm. The local car was climbing the hill when they saw a car coming down, slipping from side to s'de and starting to skid sideways as it neared them. Mr. Sheffield, driving, pulled his car clear of the pavement and up the side of a hill. But the other car on the slippery road, turned around and smashed into the back of the local car. The three ladies were sitting in the rear seat and caught most of the shock. t The driver of the other car was an army officer from Quantico. He was unhurt. The injured folks were rushed to Marine Hospital at Quantico and after first aid were taken to Fredericksburg. Mrs. Bill Alligood, sister of Mrs. Sheffield, and Robert King, left the first of the week and are in Fred ericksburg with the patients. Thg local folks were on their way from here to Perryville, Md., where Lee was to undergo treat ment at the government hospital. Schnepp of Springfield, 111., wanted on an embezzlement charge, is shown above behind bars in Los Angeles pending his return to Illinois. Found selling papers, the sus pect, calling himself John Mason, declared his memory of much of the past was a blank. TWO HELD ROBBERY CHARGES Two Local Boys Caught In Garysburg Store Friday Night Julian Hale and Willie Deaton two local boys, are being held for trial in the Jackson jail after they were caught in a store at Garys burg Friday night. A woman who saw them break into the store phoned the Weldon police and the boys were caught red-handed. They were lodged in the Weldon jail for the night and attempted to escape but failed. (Turn Over) MIDNIGHT ATTACK ISFATAL Former Mill Manager And Banker Dies In Richmond FUNERAL FRIDAY The community was shock ed today with the news of the sudden death of John L. Pat terson who died after a heart attack at his Jiome in Rich mond at i- idnight Wednes day. He had retired feeling bad ly and thought he whs suffer ing from indigestion. Friends from Roanoke Rapids were in his Richmond office yesterday and he was feeling all right. He made a business visit here on the 14th of this month. Funeral services will be held this Friday at 4 p. m. at the residence on St. Andrews Lane, Westhamp ton, Richmond. Mr. Patterson was President of the Citizens Bank & Trust Co. of this city, having- organized the bank in 1919. He moved to Rich mond in 1920 and was director of the First & Merchants Bank of Richmond and of the Virginia Trust Co. of that city. He came to Roanoke Rapids in April 1901. His brother, the late Sam. Patterson was pres ident of Roanoke Mills Co. and had just built the Rosemary Manu facturing Co. Mr. John Patterson came here as vice president and general manager of Rosemary Mfg. Co. and retained that position until the latter part of 1919. He was also a director of Roanoke Mills Co. and a stockholder in Patterson Mills Co. While a citizen oi KoanoKe Rapids, Mr. Patterson was active in civic and churchwork. He was a member of the Roanoke Rapids Hospital Board, a member of the School Board, vestryman and trea surer of the Episcopal Church, for many years chairman of the Hali fax County Road Board, and served in several offices including the Presidency of the N. C. Cotton Manufacturers Association. He was a splendid citizen and leader, highly respected and ad mired by the entire citizenship for his sterling qualities.
