FIGHT FOR HILL BILL
2 Homes Destroyed

WITH THE EDITOR
In the resolutions of the Ves
try of the All Saints Episcopal
Church and the Laymen’s Lea
gue in regard to Mark R. Vick,
deceased, the following state
ment should most impress the
man on the street: “he was kind,
considerate, patient and toler
ant of their (his fellowman’s)
opinions and convictions.”
Truthfully stated, there is no
higher tribute that could be
paid. While all the other things
may be forgotten, please re
member the above-quoted state
ment. In this era of intolerance
the passing of one who has the
virtue of tolerance is a tragedy
indeed.

If, as our Raleigh correspondent
says, Congressman Lindsay War
ren becomes a candidate for te U.
S. Senate from North Carolina, the
Young and versatile leader from
the extreme Eastern part of the
State is going to give te austere,
severe Senator' Bailey plenty to
worry about. While the Senator
has been voting with the adminis
tration of late, his previous re
cord is nothing to brag about.
Congressman Warren is a close
personal friend of both the Presi
dent and the Vice-President, has
followed faitfully throughout and
should that be the issue, will have
much the better of the case in
the race.

2 Others
Damaged
By Fire
South Rosemary Scene of
Costly. Fire Monday
Morning
An early morning fire, Monday,
caused complete destruction of two
houses in South Rosemary, with
two others damaged and a loss of
from $6,000 to 8,000, while that
entire block in the suburb section
was endangered because of lack
of water hydrants and-proper faci
lities to fight fire.
Quick response by the loal Fire
Department saved several othe"
homes as the flames, angered by
the March winds, for a time threa
tened adjoining residences.
The two houses completely des
troyed were the property of Mrs.
Clary of Burnswick County, Va.
and of Mr. Medlin of Halifax.
Two other houses were partially
damaged. A chimney from "me
of the destroyed homes fell on
the next house causing much dam
age. Flames spread to a fourth
house which was partially saved.
Two firemen were injured in the
fight made to keep the flames
from spreading. Rufus Britton
was overcome by smoke and will
be a patient in the local hospital
for several days. Willie Strickland
suffered back injuries and was ad
vised by doctors to stay in bed for
for a few days.
There is no fire hydrant in South
Rosemary and the local department
was forced to send back to town
twice for extra hose in order to
stretch a line a distance of 2,250
feet to Chockoyotte Creek. Part
of the hose furnished was from
Roanoke Mills Co.
Some of the furniture in the two
houses destroyed was saved. Wel
don Fire Dept, was called but
arrived late.

This bill would give the
voters of North Carolina an
opportunity to decide whether
or not they want a State con
