ANNUAL MEETING OF LOCAL WOMAN’S CLUB -u The Roanoke Rapids Woman’s Club met Monday for the annual business meeting. Mrs. W. A. Thorne presided and gave a re- j port of the general activities of• the club for the year and recom mended that the Civic Department merge with the Garden Depart ment for the coming year. This suggestion was voted on and ac cepted by the members of the club. The treasurer, Mrs. Paul Hey denrich, reported fifty-three paid memberships for the year with a total expenditure of $285.82. Mrs. William Batton has ?>een elected Treasurer of the Club for the coming year. Mrs. A. Meikle, Chairman of the Home and Gar den Department, gave a report of meetings held and announced that Mrs. C. A. Wyche had been ap pointed chairman of this depart ment for next year. Mrs. R. P. Beckwith as chair man of the Welfare Department gave a report of the year’s work. Forty children have been supplied with milk throughout the year with an expenditure of $246.63. Fifty dollars was donated by this department for playground work during '“last summer. Mrs. Paul Reid will take the Chairmanship of this department for the next. year. Mrs. Bohnson Weathers, Chair man of the Library Committee, reported that 90 books had been added to the library this year and that Miss Rebecca Bounds would keep the library open during the summer months on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 and Thursday evening from 7 to 8 P. M. Mrs. J. N. Bynum will be chair man of the Literature and Fine Arts Department next year and Mrs. A. N. Martin will be chair man of the program committee. The Boy Scouts presented bird houses they had built to the Wo man’s Club, and they were turned over to the Garden Department for distribution in public grounds in the city. The following membership com mittee was appointed: Mrs. Paul Heydenrich, Mrs. William Medlin, Mrs. Leslie Towe, and Mrs. R. P. Beckwith. Plans will be formu lated during the summer for a membership campaign to begin in the early fall. -o Surprise Party Miss Blanche Mitchell was given a surprise party by her mother last Saturday night at her home on Cedar Street in Weldon. During an evening of dancing, drinks were served at nine o' clock and sherbet and cake at ten thirty. Miss Mitchell’s surprise guests were Misses Nancy Suiter, Janet Robinson, Jocelyn Harris, Frances Johnson, Elizabeth Holmes, Isabelle Briggs, Annie Hunter Fisher, Juanita Hurley, Martha Ellis, of Garysburg, Susie Spruill Mohorn, and Messrs. Spot Butts, of Halifax, Sewell Moore, F. I. Robinson, Charlie William son, C. 0. Bounds. Cuban Influence A rhumba or tango is sug gested by this decidedly Cuban evening gown of orange, gray, and white striped taffeta, cut diagonally to give a halter neck and a bouffant silhouette. The point motif is carried out in the fringed ruffles of taffeta which edge the hemline and come to a point in front. The gown is modeled by Mary Astor, film player. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Williams and Mrs. Claud Gayle of Roanoke' Rapids and A. G. Waters, of Lit tleton visited Mr. and Mrs. Ben nie Strickland Sunday. Tea At Woman’s Club On Saturday afternoon the Wo man’s Club was the scene of a lovely tea when Mrs. David Trayn ham and Miss Florine Holt jointly entertained honoring Mrs. Albert Cannaday, Mrs. Hugh Childress, Mrs. Junius Goodman of Chris tiansburg, Va. Throughout the club house large bowls of mixed garden flowers interspersed with ferns and lillies made a lovely picture. The guests were greeted as they arrived by Mrs. Frank Williams and Mrs. Frank Nash and presented to the receiving line composed of Mrs. Traynham, Miss Holt, Mrs. Goodman, Mrs. Canna day, Mrs. Childress, Mrs. Pendleton Grizzard and Miss Marie Coffee. On leaving the receiving line Mrs. George Hayes directed them to the following ladies who assisted in entertaining and serving the guests, Mrs. Frank Kemp, Mrs. Tom White, Mrs. Louise Patterson, Mrs. A. J. Young, Mrs. Page Bugg and Miss Virginia Jackson. A bout a hundred and fifty guests called during the hours from four to six. A refreshing ice course was served.
