Federal secret service operatives, paid a quick visit t( Roanoke Rapids Tuesday and ar rested a man who is charged will passing counterfeit $20 bills ir High Point and Greensboro. The man was William H. Foust, who was caught here by the G Men and local police, as he sought to escape from the home of his sis ter where he was hiding-. The Federal officers went to the front door and Officer Dobbins went to the rear of the house via the alley. Seeing the officers, Foust ran out of the rear of the house and into the alley to face Dobbins’ gun. He surrendered without giving trouble. Foust is charged with being an accomplice of James Rovere alias John Ross, in the passing of the counterfeit bills. A preliminary hearing was held at Greensboro this morning before a Federal Commissioner. He is a Greensboro man and was sought last week when Rovere was arrested and bound over to Fed eral Court. It is said Foust ad mits passing bills and turning the change over to Rovere. Officers knew he had a sister here and trailed him after he gave them the slip last week. DOGCATCHING is policeman Keeter’s long- suit these days with the police tightening up on stray dogs, uninoculated dogs, unlicensed dogs. He has a pen with about a dozen in it but one in particular has given him trouble. Caught as a stray, this dog escaped and Keeter swore out a warrant for breaking jail. When he caught him, he added an other charge: disorderly conduct. It must have been after chasing this dog that Keeter left the Chief’s car running. Either that or a certain car dealer has good copy for a real ad: the engine was running so smoothly and quietly that Keeter thought it was off, jumped out of the cai-, left it for an hour with the engine still purring along. -o —0 Fayetteville, July 24. - Joe Dooley, well-known labor lead er, was arrested and placed in jail here tonight on a charge of drunk and disorderly. Officer Tells Details The above appeared in this morning’s News and Observer. A telephone conversation with Of ficer Edge brought further de tails which will be of interest to Roanoke Rapids and Weldon citi zens, where Joe Dooley reigned as king and overlord during the disas trous textile strike of last Septem ber. NEWSGATHERING would be a much simpler matter and there would be more of it if our readers cooperated with us every week like they did this morning. From 8 to 9 a. m. the phone rang constantly. More than 20 persons called the office to tell us about a news item on page 14 of this morning’s N&O regarding the shortcomings of one Joe Dooley, former resident of Roanoke Rapids and Weldon, rabid rabble rouser, high-pressured, hot-air artist, the planet’s pluperfect promiser and champion dues-collector. He drove into town in a piece of junk and left riding in style. Left a good town just about wrecked. No wonder so many folks were intensely interested and called us. We did not mind. Do it more often. Tell us about the news that we may miss. We don’t make news. We pick it up somehow, after it happens. •-o--- - FIRST liquor store in Halifax County opened at Littleton last Satur day when a similar store opened on the Warren County side of the town. Dooley was driving and a man named Harris was with him. The officer ordered Dooley to stop but he shook his head and speeded up the car. Traffic was so heavy the officer could not get his car in front, altho he tried several times to make Dooley stop his car. In the chase, Dooley forced sev eral other cars off the road.
