Film WARNER OLAND PAT PATERSON Appear in Latest of Charlie Chan Series for Last Half Bill ■-o By HOWARD HANCOCK In step with the new season’s trend, “Woman Wanted,” which has been selected for the Monday Tuesday attraction on next week’s Imperial program, is a dramatic action picture. It moves to the tune of surprising romance and the menace of racketeering gangsters. It combines the elements that made gangster pictures such popu lar attractions, a quality which the “G-Men” cycle of films has reviv ed. It features a number of thrill ing chases and smash-ups, but also incorporates an intriguing love story. A lawyer carries on an across the-light-well flirtation, with a girl. Gangsters wreck a police car. The girl of the flirtation dashes into the lawyer’s car. She is a convicted murderess, framed by the mob which, before she gets be yond its clutches, thinks she holds a secret that is dangerous to their safety. Believing the girl’s story of innocence, as romance is born, the lawyer and girl set out to find the real killer-. Harried by the mob, both lives are in continual danger, with a triangle situation lent to the romantic angle. The pair in the end outsmart the mob sters, one of whom in dying con fesses that he is the perpetrator. Maureen O’Sullivan portrays the woman wanted by both the law and its enemies, while Joel McCrea is the hero who befriends her. An imposing supporting cast for the two stars is composed, in the main, by Lewis Stone, Louis Cai hern, Adrienne Ames, and Edgar Kennedy. * * * * * * -k Gregory Ratoff is the star of “This Woman Is Mine,” for rhe *»7ednesday-only, “bargain day” attraction on next week’s Imperial program. . * * * * * * * Warner Oland’s latest screen ap pearance as that genial and philo sophical Chinese sleuth, Charlie Chan, will take place at the Impe rial next Thursday and Frida/ when Fox Film’s latest vehicle for the inimitable Oland, “Charlie Chan in Egypt,” will be the at traction there. In this picture, the eighth of the famed Chan stories, the pro ducers have effected an ingenious ly thrilling and baffling mystery, it is said. “Charlie Chan in Egypt” is described as the biggest and most pretentious Chan picture yet made, and carries the interest from beginning to end, with Stepin Fetchit adding much to the comedy situations. The story carries Charlie Chan to the mystery-scented land of the Pharaohs, in the Valley of the Kings, amid the splendors and riches of the last resting places of the mighty monarchs of thousands of years ago.
