ANNUAL RUMOR ABOUT
SALE OF LOCAL MILLS
-u-*
Rumors Heard About
Once Every Year;
Absolutely Groundless
-o
About once every year, the ru
mors fly thick and fast in and a
bout Roanoke Rapids concerning
the sale of the local cotton mills.
For the past week or so these
annual rumors hare been heard
here. The mills were going to be
sold to this person and that per
son, to this company and that
company.
As in the past, these rumors are
untrue and absolutely without
foundation.
4
Where- such tales start is never
known. They travel like wildfire.
All they do is to serve to upset
folks and Worry them. They do
nobody any good.
Last year, the rumors went so
far as to get printed in the State
newspapers, thus making an of
ficial denial necessary. The ru
mors this year are just as false,
altho not worth an official denial.
Rooster Lashley
Dies Saturday
Lorenzo (Rooster) Lashley, who
has been a problem to the police
for a long time, died Saturday
night from a cerebral hemor
rhage.
Rooster, who was cock of the
walk among the colored residents
of the community, had a habit of
beating up his girl friends. Thurs
day night one of them took ex
ception to his treatment and threw
a bottle at him.
The bottle hit his forehead,
broke and cut his scalp. A frag
ment of broken glass went in his
eye and had Rooster lived he
would have lost his right eye.
Doctors do not think this blow
was the cause of his death altho
it might have been a contributing
factor. Rooster worked for a long
time for Smiths Service Station.
He never had any trouble with
white folks but plenty wit)i his
own race. The funeral was Sun
day.
