(Peg) Gibson has been appointed manager of the Roanoke Rapids br" .ch of the State Re-Employment Service and the office was o pened here this morning. Mrs. W. L. Johnson of Halifax will assist Mr. Gibson with the office work. This office will serve all of Halifax County and is a branch of district office at Rocky Mount. S. D. Bennett, dis trict manager at Rocky Mount, was here today instructing Mr. Gibson in his new work. The dis -o (Continued on Page 27) Cotton Storage Finished The building for the Roanoke Rapids Bonded Warehouse Co. was finished last week and the auto matic sprinkler system is being installed this week. The building, a huge affair lo cated near the ball park, will have a capacity of five thousand bales of cotton. It will be ready for use in about ten days. The company was incorporate ! last week with an authorized cap ital stock of $25,000. Officers of the company are J. J. Wade, President, R. E. Cleaton, Jr., Vice President, and William Harris II, Secretary and Treasur er. H. S. Loy was one of the in corporators. ANNUAL RUMOR ABOUT SALE OF LOCAL MILLS -u-* Rumors Heard About Once Every Year; Absolutely Groundless -o About once every year, the ru mors fly thick and fast in and a bout Roanoke Rapids concerning the sale of the local cotton mills. For the past week or so these annual rumors hare been heard here. The mills were going to be sold to this person and that per son, to this company and that company. As in the past, these rumors are untrue and absolutely without foundation. 4 Where- such tales start is never known. They travel like wildfire. All they do is to serve to upset folks and Worry them. They do nobody any good. Last year, the rumors went so far as to get printed in the State newspapers, thus making an of ficial denial necessary. The ru mors this year are just as false, altho not worth an official denial. Rooster Lashley Dies Saturday Lorenzo (Rooster) Lashley, who has been a problem to the police for a long time, died Saturday night from a cerebral hemor rhage. Rooster, who was cock of the walk among the colored residents of the community, had a habit of beating up his girl friends. Thurs day night one of them took ex ception to his treatment and threw a bottle at him. The bottle hit his forehead, broke and cut his scalp. A frag ment of broken glass went in his eye and had Rooster lived he would have lost his right eye. Doctors do not think this blow was the cause of his death altho it might have been a contributing factor. Rooster worked for a long time for Smiths Service Station. He never had any trouble with white folks but plenty wit)i his own race. The funeral was Sun day. TIME TO REGISTER GIVEN The city schools will be gin Monday, September the ninth. Supt. 'C. W. Davis fay*1 it will help considerably if all pupils will observe the following schedule for regis tration : All first grade children, begin ners and repeaters, are asked to register at their respective build ings on Friday morning, Septem ber 6th, at 9 o'clock. The prin cipals and the first grade teach ers will be there for the purpose of classifying them. It is impor tant that every one register be fore Monday. If your child has not been vaccinated against small pox, please have it done this week. All elementary children above the first grade who did not at tend any of the schools in Roa noke Rapds last term are asked to register in Miss Hearne’s of fice Frdiay morning. September 6th at 9 o’clock. All children in the first three grades will go to their respective buildings on Monday morning, September 9th at 8:20. All Fourth Grade children, ex cept those who go to the Clara Hearne 'School, 'will register at the high school auditorium, Mon day, September 9th at 8:20. Those who belong to the Clara Hearne School will register there at 8:20. All Fifth and Sixth Grade chil dren will register at the high school auditorium, Monday, Sep tember 9th at 8:20. All Seventh Grade pupils are asked to report at the high school auditorium Wednesday, September 4th, at nine o’clock. All Eighth and Ninth grade pu pils are asked to report for reg istration, Wednesday, September 4th, at two o’clock. All Tenth and Eleventh grade v pupils are asked to register Thurs day morning, September 5th, a% nine o’clock. All Seniors are asked to register Thursday afternoon, September 5th, at two o’clock.
